Hood Ornament

1 Attachment(s)
Of course all of my friends send me pictures of VWs that they see either in person or online and usually its nothing new to me BUT this morning i got an email with this in it!
Notice the mid hood ornament (hope you can see it, i can email the original pic if not)? Does anyone know what that is off of or do you think its a custom/handmade thing? Either way i'm in love and have to have one now. I'll mount the damn thing on the Durango until Bettie is ready for it!
Any help appreciated.

Hey Bettie, good luck finding one of these. They seem to be rather rare now a days, but apparantly there was someone here in teh states doing repros of these. I'm still looking for additional info for you, but here is a link to a Samba thread about them. They are not cheap.

Heyhey,

i wanted to post this in the score thread but since there is a thread for this here i go..

i found this at the Antwerp classic salon and took it home.:dancing:
since i have never seen it before i did some research about it.
there seem to be 3 types (or more)
the completly "flat" one , like mine, is an American hood ornament.
the one with the 3d rocket on top is the Australian one
and then there is one with wings, the brazilian one.

i took mine home for 200 euros (askin' price was 350, but he tought it was a australian one, so after some quick research i baffelt him with bullshit, since it was an american one and they where not:wink: rare)

afterworts i got it confirmed that it was a genuine old one by a pretty jealous vw-icon:grin:

so here's a looksie at the eye catcher for my rod..

Shouldn't cost too much in shipping. Not sure on Maltese postage costs but to send something that size and weight from the UK to the States would only cost us ten dollars or so by standard airmail.

Re: Hood Ornament

I don't know, I don't think anyone from this site should be bidding on an item like this. It looks to me like you would have to drill a couple of holes in the hood trim and maybe even the hood to mount it and if we were to bid on it, it would be like we condone the alteration of original, un-molested parts......Oops, wrong site....nevermind.

Re: Hood Ornament

OK folks.....here is my vision for a Volksrods version of the hood ornament.

http://www.carartbyjohn.com/2011Misc...odOrnament.jpg

In this version, I would make the base a separate piece so that the owner could adjust the angle of it relative to the rest and give some flexibility on mounting location. Would also make it adaptable to Type 3s :hmm: Would just need to drill and tap in the position required.

So Unk.....Think you could cast it? What would the pattern have to be made out of?

KQQL66 April 12th, 2011 12:40 AM

Re: Hood Ornament

That design is great Jaranson....when the one from ebay gets here I will be doing a mould and making them from cast iron so that they rsut and look very Ratty for those that want the original design....but your volksrod inspired version has caught my eye also....i'm sure it will look great

MDF works OK.
Baltic Birch plywood is stronger,
and nicer than regular plywood.

The pattern making industry uses $$$ Magic Plywood,
probably reinforced/impregnated with resin.

Should it say VOLKSRODS (plural) or VOLKSROD (singular)?

Would it be better to use fewer/deeper teeth on the cog ? Might be easier to tap.

Might be able to do two versions, T1 and T3,
both with a fixed base at the appropriate angle.

The base could be heavy enough to allow
the owner to "fine tune" the position before tapping.

The foundry that does my seats can do it,
in Aluminum, Brass, or Bronze, no problem.

Unfortunately Brass and Bronze are significantly
more money than Aluminum.   :hmm:

But they have an Aluminum alloy that polishes up very nicely.

If you guys are wanting it to be able to rust, then there is a simple technique to imitate this. I'd suggest aluminum, that way folks could run it as is, or polish it for a shiny appearance, or use the proper paint on it to allow it to rust. I'll put together a tutorial on this if folks like.

Unkl Ian April 12th, 2011 10:46 AM

Re: Hood Ornament

I think Brass and Bronze are easier/cheaper to Chrome plate,
compared to Aluminum. But Aluminum can still be Chrome plated.
---
There are a few places that make the "instant rust" type paint.
Modern Options is one. I wouldn't spend the money for their
patina solution. Instead, I would use regular Vinegar; soak a cloth,
wrap it over the area, and cover in plastic. The longer the acid acts,
the richer the colors. If it dries too quickly, you get a cheap looking
Orange rust.

Re: Hood Ornament

A few years ago I was playing around and cast an aluminum hood ornament using the one that is on the hood of a Bug as my pattern.
I made 2 of them using 2 different types of aluminum, Mt Dew alloy what I call "canaluminum" (made from only aluminum Mt Dew cans, code Red to be exact) and "356 alloy aluminum" which when polished looks real nice compared to Mt Dew can aluminum.

About the end of 2009 (I think) I did a 3rd using the 356 alloy trying to make the finished part as thin as I could possibly get it, well it didn't turn out very well due to it being so thin and parts of my molding sand falling in not letting the mold cavity fill all the way.

Well here's a picture of all three of them from left to right, the first one I made using "canaluminum", the one in the middle is made using "356 alloy" as well as the one at the right.
I'm gonna try to make another one using the one on the right as my pattern and once mounted on the hood (or elsewhere) cut the outside circle "feeding gates" off and just leave what's left of the VW emblem and it's circle and the so it looks as if it has oxidized away giving it that old rustic "Rat Rod" look to it

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...6/IMG_3579.jpg

Once I let it oxidize a bit, then run some sand paper over it to shine the high parts it will look nice
as well as old and ratty

Maybe I'll make a set of ear rings out of the other 2, or 2 big VW necklaces (ear rings may stretch your earlobes a few inches if worn for extended periods of time)

Today I brought it out and walked around looking for a good place to mount it, I liked the deck lid as well, I make 2 more but just make them so they all look different and mount then on the front where the antenna went, as well as on the deck lid

I need to clean it up from driving though a puddle of water and concrete from where they were cutting it in the street, it doesn't wipe off easily anymore

I haven't figured out how I'm gonna mount it yet, either some short small screw, or maybe some adhesive, hell maybe JB Weld :Idunno:

Roger that.

Didn't get as far today as I had hoped. I did manage to come up with the cut sheet for the basic elements of the hood ornament. The top, short pattern will be cut from 3/16" material. The bottom, longer pattern will be cut from 1/8" material.

http://www.carartbyjohn.com/2011Misc...entCut_Web.jpg

It will all be cut from balsa to start.....on the new laser cutters that I got trained on tonight at the new TechShop here in town!!!:dancing::dancing::dancing::dancing:

Then I will put it all together, sand and fill it, soak it with SuperGlue to harden it and see where I am at. If all goes well, I can send it to Unkl Ian for a quote on getting it cast.

That is still the plan, yes.

I took some time at lunch today to run over to TechShop and laser cut the bits for the hood ornament and a few other fun things. :dancing:

Have to say the laser cutter is amazing. Total cut time for everything was less than 5 minutes. Only spent an hour total monkeying around set it up and trying to remember stuff from the class the night before. All parts cut from 1/16", 3/32", and 1/8" balsa. Totally cool...

Oh yea....pictures might help. :funny:

Just dry assembled. Need to glue it all together and add the draft and stuff...

and a couple of shots of the fun stuff...

That is a 4" wide sheet of 1/8" balsa...

I will be assembling these and painting them up for the auction at Autorama this year.

The machine can also do laser etching of jpeg images on a variety of surfaces. Got some ideas for that capability too...

Re: Hood Ornament

Sweet.

I would suggest, the parting line down the middle,
left to right. So the draft would taper to either side.
I'm guessing 3 degrees is plenty.

Buy two and mill or grind them down.

Yup. That is what I was planning. The parting line for the base will be parallel to the ground so it will have a top and bottom.

Glad you are all liking it so far. Hopefully the casting costs won't be so high as to make them unreasonably priced. Will keep posting progress.
