I was looking around online and a number of hot rod suppliers have kits. Anywhere from $100-300 for LED strips in various lengths and shapes and come with acrylic lenses you sand down to make flush. My car budget for the '37 is taking a toll so a how-to would be great! Thanks, Mark

I believe there was a how to in street rodder within the past year or two. I'll look for it when I get home from work.

Basically, you glue the plastic lenses in place, then sand smooth.
Probably some special adhesive involved.

Works great on show cars that never see weather.

I would worry about the plastic and metal moving
at different rates in extreme weather conditions.

in the newest issue of CK Delux there was a cool 59 caddy variant. basicly it looked like the taillights are stacked end to end. they came with buckets. i think that would look bad ass

Thanks for the ideas on the tal lights. Still looking at options.

Hey Paelpainter, I haven't forgotten about you. Interested how you poor flush tail lights when you have a verticle surface.

The rear end is taking shape finally. Compared to that earlier photo, yikes!

You seem so calm in person, when you step into the garage do you take off your glasses and become a metal shaping super hero?

It looks awesome so far the man.

Paper towel dispenser...that's FUNNY! I had to let my wife read your comment. She laughed.

HAHA...ya'll are making me laugh, thank you! Metal shaping super hero! No, not by far.

I have a limited amount of time to actually work on it. Monday 2hrs. Wed 2 hrs, Sunday 6 hrs. I have 10 hrs out of a week. I try and be ultra productive during that time and committed to "my" time. Of course, I spend the rest of the time thinking about what needs to be done so when I get to it, it's go, go go!

It's all kind of a blur, like a near fatal car wreck every time.

It's only after I'm done, take a couple of photos and download them do I realize what I've done. I usually have to go through my own build thread to see what was done and what needs to be done next.

That's my secret, don't tell anyone. I usually calm down between projects. Drives the wife nuts.

Been looking here at lights for my project. You might find something too.

I would just do 32 ford lights. Anything else would look kinda cheesy.

How about something different, like '37 Ford lights ?

garlos November 13th, 2010 06:31 PM

Re: '37 Volkster Coupe

Yeah the "modern look" lights aren't really doing it for me.

Stockish lights, or maybe something old-school like frenched-in '59 cadillac taillights seem like they would be a better fit.

Regardless, amazing car and work you've done!

Bill (ThrasherBill) came up the idea of changing his up a while back with some '65 Impala tails.

He came down and we tackled it over a weekend a while back. We did a fairly quick job putting them on, but we both agreed they'd look TITS with a slight semi-french job into the fender leveling them out vertically.

On another bug...

May not be your taste, but just an idea. If anything, it's a bit different than the same ol' same 'ol but still keeps a classic look.

Re: '37 Volkster Coupe

More great ideas, thanks. Been looking at round tail light options, even the good 'ol '37 Ford version.

My original thinking is to keep the body line smooth so I'd need to recess, flush or french fit the tail lights so not to distract from the body lines.

I'll get back there soon. Going to work on the front hood and the repairing the lower half of the rear fender. Plenty of to-do items before I'm commited.

I suppose as the build progresses and all the other components come together, I hope the overall final look will tell what direction??

I've been thinking of going with that style light too. My first car was a '64 Impala and I always liked those tail lights.

Looks like Chip offset the lights inboard, so the body line is uninterrupted.
