Beam Extender Install Walkthrough

Alright Figured I would post my pics and give a detailed description of how to install a dbug41 beam extender. This is a balljoint-balljoint extender. If you are doing a linkpin suspension install may be different.

You will Need:
A socket set
1/2", 4" long grade 8 bolts x 4 $1.84each Home depot
1/2", grade 8 nuts x 4 $0.50each Home depot
1/2", thick washers x 8 $0.88/3 in bag Home depot
1/2", thick split washers x 4 $0.38each Home Depot
Red Loctite approx $5.49 for a tube.

first loosen tie rods from steering box.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...2/IMG_1253.jpg

jack up the frame or the car and now remove tires.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...2/IMG_1254.jpg

Next loosen and remove four bolts holding front beam onto pan. Caution beam will fall, so make sure you have a jack/or support of some kind under the beam as it is heavy. I used a tire.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...2/IMG_1255.jpg

This is what it should look like without the beam attached.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...2/IMG_1256.jpg

Now bolt your extender to the pan. you will use the bolts that came out of the beam originally.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...2/IMG_1259.jpg

Now get your bolts ready to bolt the beam to the extender. Bolts should be mounted as follows, starting from top of bolt to nut. Bolt, Split washer, thick washer, through beam and extender, thick washer, and then the nut. I also recommend threading with Red Loctite so the for sure won't move. Once bolted up it should look like this.......(Note: it's easier to put bottom half of beam into extender first then rock it up into the top part of the extender)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...2/IMG_1262.jpg

now all that is left to do is put the tires back on, bolt the tie rods back onto the steering box, and reconnect your steering damper. should look like this......

All finished. I think I'm in love hahahaha

I painted this one. I used a high temp engine ceramic and baked it in the oven for 40 mins at 200 Fahrenheit. The color is actually much darker, I think because it is glossy it comes out this barney purple color, when actually it is a dark plum.

I like how you got EVERYTHING unnecessary out of the way for the pics!

Easy peasy!!:clapping:

I imagine it's a little hard to show bracing when there's nothing there to brace it to.

Hey thanks man. It was very simple. Obviously if you dont have the body off the car it could be a bit harder, but covers the basics for sure. I will be doing the steering soon and same thing it should be very easy setup. I will continue the original post in easy to understand steps.

The lock washer goes behind the nut to lock it place, not the bolt head.

hmmm, I don't know for sure. However multiple items that I have either taken apart or put together called for the split washer under the top of the head of the bolt.

This makes sense from a moment of inertia stand point. The moment will be imposed when a force is applied to the length of the bolt concentrating at the head of the bolt. I could be wrong but the shear mechanics work out for it under the bolt head.

From a bite in type of observation it makes sense under the nut, so that it will "bite in" when the nut loosens.

NASA engineers consider them garbage.......I think it is more of opinion than anything. You would probably be fine with just red loctite.

Great job on the install!! I did mine with the body on. Not much harder. Helps to have a friend or 2 handy though...lol. Someone has to make sure no one spills the beers...lol. Dbug makes some great stuff!! I own 2 of the 10" extenders. Keep up the good work GlowstickNinja!! You too Doug!! Don't forget to check out Doug's other great stuff.

Someone want to finish this? Can't build the tech bin with dead threads like this.
Cliff, check the thread by dbug41, might find more answers there.
