camshaft timing marks
 
Can the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks be checked without splitting the case to make sure that they are in time on a 1600 dual port engine ?

Not that I am aware of. Even if you pulled the oil pump, the marks would be well above the opening in the block. Maybe if you had a set-up to degree the cam that bolted up to the crank pulley (like people use for v8's) but I have never seen one for a vw. :Idunno:
