Re: Motorcycle Thread
sorry to bring it back, but I might be getting a bike and its a 82 GL500 Silverwing, I know this is a VW thread but I want a bobber how do you make a bobber though, on a low budget?Heres a pic of what the bike looks like but not the one Im getting.

Re: Motorcycle Thread
If you don't already know, a CX500 is the same bike without the fairing and trunk (well, practically), so the CX500 users' groups are a good resource.
In the meantime, here's a taste: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/199/4...63cf6c.jpg?v=0 And you might want to change your signature since both are watercooled . . . . :funny: |

So why do the shocks on the rear look different? Is this a CX500? Did they just modify a rear fender, get a diff seat and run shocks from a cx500? |
Re: Motorcycle Thread

But that's not my point - to go from stock to bobber you primarily REMOVE things. Chop the rear fender, delete the crash bars, forego mirrors and turn signals (usually illegally), etc. I've been toying for a couple of years with converting my CX to a trike (with either a Datsun or Capri II rear axle) - if you are interested, I can point you to my thoughts on that off list. :hello: |

Hmm... I think it's about time for another motorcycle post.
I recently put together a video my "Ugly Duc" project. The bike isn't completley finished yet, but then there's more I'd like to do with the video too, so there ya go. The Ugly Duc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Os2XqSnpyw It's definitely off topic for this site so in addition to that link, I'll post up a pic of one of my latest bike projects that may be a little more on theme here... at least it's going to be a hardtail... The hardtail (a VERY early mock up): http://www.teamyikes.com/Resources/MockUp_4186.JPG |
Re: Motorcycle Thread
My sooter. Over 150,000 miles and will still pull the front wheel up if I twist it too hard. My wife doesn't ride any more, so this thread has me wanting to build a Bobber.

anyone interested in a bunch of goldwing parts 1988 1100 all veter fairings. the bike is complete the heads were removed for valve work and never re installed . i was going to cut it up for a set of trike forks but now ive got too many projects

i'm mostly into straight line style, low lean and long, but if it has wheels i usually like it... i don't however like the over the top OCC style or "coontail" (let me see how wild and different i can be) bikes...
|
Re: Motorcycle Thread
this is a perfect example of the style im not much into, but a well executed bike. i used to help the guy that painted it, and the guy that built it runs a shop near my hometown called Gypsy Choppers www.bigassbike.com he builds some pretty cool shit. guess you could also call them "artsy fartsy" bikes... this one was supposed to be an easyriders feature bike, dunno if it ever made it or not, but its obviously not gonna get tons of road time...

Re: Motorcycle Thread
a guy i know was trying to sell this and couldn't, so he asked if i wanted it free. i was into bikes for about 12 years, but got bored and got out of it. i miss my last harley though and decided to build a yammy chopper like it. don't laugh!! i only got about $350 bucks in it and i am almost done. just some paint and wiring and it will be for sale. the first pic was when i got it and the 2nd is my last hog.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...IMG_0002-7.jpg http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...IMG_0005-6.jpg and here it is: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...h_DSC00116.jpg http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...h_DSC00118.jpg it has a yammy speedo in the hog cluster on the tank and an automotive ignition switch to start it. the rear fender was made fron three stock ones and the handelbars are the stock ones with a little work. i also made it a foot clutch and a jockey shift. |

No laughing from me...I love those Yammy chops, bobs and trackers!! Your's looks great!

Re: Motorcycle Thread
considering that it's only a sporty, still swingarm, probably fairly high miles. fancy tank, paint, and handlebars. i'd say no on it, as you can buy a damn near new sporty for that much. maybe 5000-5500, but that's my opinion.
i've been thinking about buying a decent used sporty for awhile now. plenty of companies already make a rigid frame for them, parts are plentiful, and cheap... who knows, i'll ride the shit out of the one i just bought for awhile and see how it goes... $100 says all the rubs in my town will think i'm on a damn harley anyway just cause they don't know the damn difference between their OCC shit and a $5 knockoff... |

first make it a hardtail bobber.
maybe later if i have more money to spend i'll put on spoked wheels and a apehanger, who knows. (got a thing that needs repairs and to be dropped to the ground, volksrod project- buying parts for it , and now the xs650). and i need to build a garage/workspace for the cars projects, but that will be this summer. so for now i bought the xs, after seeing the one that's sold here, and doing a little search on the net. got some room left in the shed where i can work on it. |

Re: Motorcycle Thread
Hey Hey, Cafe bikes! I always wanted one of the XLCR Sportsters, but they were too expen$ive and could have used a few improvements. I built my own version using an inexpensive `83 XLX
(2k in 1986). The entire front end is from a KZ-1000 cop bike. Rear wheel also. Brakes are all Kawi. Fairing is BMW R-90S, w/8" Yamaha headlight...http://Cafe Sporty.jpgremovable saddle with tool tray is from BSA A65L. Aircleaner is modified HD (the air scoop is actually made us from the sheetmetal from and old split window roof !) Rearsets are hand built. Exhaust is a copy of the XLCR welded up from a bunch of parts store bends, with Supertrapps. At 30,000 miles the engine was worn out. It's all S&S inside and balanced within an inch of its life. A friend did the machine work and I did the assembly. There's a bunch of other mods and I still run the bike around. I've had it for nearly 22 years and over sixty thousand miles. Currently, in my 'spare time,' I'm building a new fuel tank |
Re: Motorcycle Thread
I've got a question that relates to M/Cs... I'm all about safety i.e: Leather jacket, gloves, helmet... but whats a best way to have protection during the summer? Summer here gets to 110*+ and there's no way in hell I'm riding around in full leather. Any suggestions?

I'd love to send a dadgum picture but I'm a computer dumbass and can't get it to scan to my `reply,' the forum etc....Though I did get it to pop up in my own e-mail (arrgh). I e-mailed Steve for help.
I've been using a vented jacket with a zip out liner as an alternative to my old leather jacket for the last three summers. It hit's in the low hundreds at times here and one day I'd been sweating in traffic (liner out, vents open) and damn near froze when I hit the freeway. |

Re: Motorcycle Thread

most good jackets have a removeable liner. that will cool you donw some. there are also some makers that use perforated leather in the front panels. not the most important panels for crash protection so it doesn't put you at any higher risk but it lets some air flow through. i now vanson has a few perforated jackets available. don't get lazy and ride without protection though. paul |

Re: Motorcycle Thread
Knuckles and ScottS. Both are friggin sweet. I love what people do with the XS. They just rock for a cheap starting point, work just as well as a chopper, bobber or a street tracker, and are a good size for a fun little bike to ride, no matter what style. Now that I got my own welder, a hardtail XS is probably my next cheap project and I can actually work on that in my basement, so it might actually get finished!

My old 84' Honda Shadow Custom 700C, before i was rear ended by a tanker truck in merriville IN with no helmet on doing 65mph over the handlebars switching highways from I-80 to I-65. That was 5 years ago in August. |
Re: Motorcycle Thread

I know all about that one. When i was rear ended by the tanker truck on the highway, all i had on was a long sleave tshirt, blue jeans and a pair of Rowley XL 3 Vans skateshoes on and no helmet, it was protecting the sissy bar! but its no joke, my dad sells parts for that stuff for a living to the motorcycle dealers in IL, I grew up meeting guys and girls paralyzed from the neck down or waist down. im extremely lucky to be alive right now. You can get away with blue jeans, jean jacket and some leather gloves and a good full face helmet with a visor dot approved. Its all in the motorcycle handbooks for each state and take the class highly recommended. Most guys who start riding a bike thats to big for them end up dying or in the hospital for quite some time. I've been riding since i was 3 years old dirt bikes and what not. Being too close to the front of that semi that day wasn't the brightest thing in the world. I definitely thank God everyday and have a nasty worm like scar on my elbow to remind me of it all! |
Re: Motorcycle Thread
Glad you're still around to tell about your adventure...ouch!:thumbsup:
I've been picking up freebie Yamahas (and worth every penny!). Got a 550 Seca (bad engine, but all the body work and header) , 750 Seca (bad engine, great dual pipes, no tank, bent upper forks but dual discs) and a 900 Seca engine, with carbs and good compression. I'm thinking of popping the 900 engine in the 750 frame with 550 tank, fairing, and tail piece. Building a hot rod bike, so far cost had been gas to pick the stuff up.:dancing: |
Re: Motorcycle Thread
free old bikes are the shit.

Re: Motorcycle Thread
Actually, they're more like a curse. I'll see some bike sitting in a side yard and with a few bits missing, and I can picture it back together and running. So, imagine how it is for me when three bikes of the same make come together, and a lot of the parts interchange. :dancing::welder::sawzall:
One day my wife was looking under a tarp where I had a couple of bikes, um, stored, and said, "I guess it could be worse, you could have a passion for every old abandoned Grayhound bus you spot." :panic::panic: Of course, we'd need a much bigger yard...... |

Picked this up on Saturday for $500. It's a '78 KZ650 with an '81 KZ750 engine stuffed in it. It's been sitting for 3 years and hadn't been started in a year or so. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...bike/750_4.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...bike/750_3.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...bike/750_1.jpg I dropped a new battery in her last night and had her cranking over but it looks like I'll be pulling the carbs apart (which I expected to have to do anyway). Gas pours out the float bowl overflow tubes as fast as the tank can supply it. I suspect a stuck needle and seat in one or more of the carbs. I'm hoping to have her running by next weekend. I'm going to leave it pretty much as is until I'm done with the testing for my license and then I'm hoping to have it looking something like this: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...e/Cafe6501.jpg |
