I am thinking I will want to toss my hot rod styled bicycle on top of my bug from time to time. I'd rather not have a rack that looks too modern. I suppose I could make some sort of little trailer but it seems like overkill. I like the look of the old beetle racks but they don't seem to take bikes to well without the bike tray starting a foot over the roof. I will probably add a rag top eventually.

Was a thread on hoodride...but it got hacked. Pretty much.....Weld one up. A lil angle iron and some rod for support by the wheels/

what about hanging down the back of the car? kinda like the vw ski racks that the resto custom guys love

theres a mount down near the bumper, and one on the fresh air vents, if you had a roof rack you could have one on there too.. basically all you would neeed is a pair of cleats for the wheels, lok at yakima racks for ideas there,, the important part is the strap that clamps the wheel in and compresses the tire for a super tight hold.... then you could have something going across the fresh air vents with an upright that would clamp on to the top tube and hold the bike up.

I'm sure theres tons of other ways of doing it too

I'm just going with a yak rack when I have a bug running and want to take a bike

Any reason it has to be ON TOP?

A wheel channel up the rear, roll the bike up it.

Fab a couple screw-type clamps to immobilize the wheels, and have a couple cinches to lock it's side-to-side movement running down to some convenient body point.

Easy to load/unload, just roll it up!

Mount it with cinches just like a strap-on rack.

"Strap-on rack"...

Would that be a double entendre mixed metaphor?

It just sounds wrong, but I mean the ones for bikes, not transvestites.

Hey, think about it; the bike rack, not cross dressing.
