Tinkering these last few days in readiness for the big European road trip. Engine oil & filter changed, clutch adjusted, rear lights sorted and I now have a licence-plate light as well!

The new Goodrich's have performed well and only just clear the springplate adjuster blocks by 8mm....enough :wink:

I've been tweeking the damping to very good effect, noticeable changes within 2 clicks, I now have it handling much better.

Think I still need to adjust the rear wheel alignment, I have a hunch it's toe-in and should be toe-out. It has a tendency to rear steer now and again, probably related to the road surface/truck tracks and bumps?

Yikes! Did someone steal the wheels off the blue bus, or is it simply veeerrry low?

As far as the engine ID, it appears to be a very rare dual-carb air cooled 1620cc flat four from a '62 Snardley Tinwell. Fortunately, they drop right in to a VW. :grin:

The clue's in the club name - Lo'E'Nuf VeeDub Club haha! It's low , owned by Rob and driven very often, mainly on family camp outs, almost every other weekend during the summer. Brakes needed adjusting which is why the workshop is open to members on a Wednesday evening.

The Yellow/grey split is Chris' he own the shop and his is almost daily driven and very used as well. No trailer queens here....no Sir!

I had the engine down as a pre-blower, 5x cylinder Farnsley Wassock spark ignition diesel.....but I think you're right on this one V8 :wink: It might just fit a 356 as well though?

Engine looks like it could have come out of my 67 Porsche , or maybe it was the 57. At my age the decades tend to flow together. :wacko:

The 356 1600 engine came out of a glass rep 356 coupe fitted to a VW type3 pan with modified f/r mounts and flat sheet steel pans....all a bit thrown together by today's standards but it's been like it for a good while as far as I know.

What a blast we all had at European Bug-In. Well worth the trip, 650 miles door to door round trip with no real mechanical issues with both Beetles performing admirably. I say no issues, Matt did lose his speedo on the '67 and quite a bit of his beam on the atrocious Belgian roads and I lost half of my front licence plate getting off the ferry boarding ramps (it was knarly anyway).

When the stewards saw us weaving our way over the boarding ramps to avoid grounding out, they pointed us to the flat access deck rather than send up upstairs which was nice :grin:

Thank you Tranny - Speedo hadn't run at 50-60mph for so long, must've dried out and seized snapping the drive cable....a minor issue given the fuel pump and throttle linkage failure a week before!!

Thanx psycopiglet, built it to drive it....and that's what I'm trying to do :grin:

Update: I'm not sure what the system is in the US, but in the UK we have to pay road tax ( $20-300+) every year on every vehicle we drive on the roads.

Happily, being as my bug is a '72 model it is 'tax exempt' (pre'74 vehicles) but the process has to be applied anyway, the nice bit is the total cost = £0.00 heheh!

Still driving it and it's going rather well if I do say so myself.

Daily drivers are the best! I get lots of waves from other Vee Dub drivers when I'm running the SC around. I'm seeing more and more VW bugs on the road. :hello:

Mine's not exactly a 'daily' V8tranny, but I do use it as much as I can. Not too many Beetles seen on the roads, except at weekends.

Not much going on, but I did finally, get to fit my old skool Moto-Lita woodrim steering wheel. A mate turned an adaptor as the mounting PCD/boss is no longer made, even by Moto-Lita. SO I found a simple cast alloy Beetle boss with no flanges and had him make an adaptor out of 100mm alloy bar. The two mate together very well indeed and I'm very pleased with how it looks.

Just renewed my vehicle insurance, £83 p/a including breakdown/recovery service which is a great price with a good co, RH Specialist Insurance.

I'd spotted a FB post about an oil pressure gauge working off the engine block, T piece allows stock pressure switch connection. This is only for show really, although it does allow you to see oil pressure while working on the engine - for what good that will do?

Anyhoo, I really liked the look of the white/red version (also available in classic black/white). It arrived as promised and I installed it today. Really pleased with it and it's showing 50psi at tickover which is good

Simple install, but there are now 3x more joins to get oil-tight!

In other news: The battery went flat the other day, so a new one today and all is well.

Test drive with the Moto-Lita wheel, it feels very different to the other woodrim, much stronger. Me likey!

I have always run an oil pressure gauge on mine like that, been doing it for years
What made me start doing it was my oil light would come on every once in a while, I didn't wanna do away with the light & I didn't wanna run an oil pressure line all the way up to the dash

If the light starts flickering at idle, I get out & check the gauge, as long as it's at or above 10 psi I'm good to keep on going

I agree Ron, It was reassuring to see the actual oil psi, the image is of the engine running and it showing 45psi....cool.


UK MOT time again, in on Monday. I've put a few miles on it but I'm not expecting any issues....watch this space :wink:
