Re: Hood Ornament

Nobody hold their breathe for these. I am sure it will be the middle of January before I can even get a quote for having them cast. Whether I have them made or not will depend on the cost and how many parts I would have to make.

My initial thinking is that I will do a relatively small run, maybe 50 pieces. Kind of make them a bit more exclusive for those that pony up the bucks for one. We will see.

Stay tuned.....try not to pass out from holding your breathe too long...

the possibilities are endless....

Lots of sanding and filling still to do before getting around to the casting part. I am really happy with the results so far...

Looks like I will be visiting a small foundry in the Toledo area later this week or next week to get a quote on casting the hood ornaments!:dancing:

I have a little more work to do on the pattern, but am just about ready. I will let everyone know what I find out.

Stay tuned!

Not sure. It is not all that good looking with the filler and stuff in it now. Would be nice if it survives, but not really necessary.

I got the pattern done tonight.

Unless the foundry needs some changes. Will see when I get done there in the next few days....

Because the part is not flat on one side, they might like
to have a follower, or support, so they can do a False Cope.
http://www.foundry.ray-vin.com/follower/follower.htm
That would make it much quicker/easier to get an even parting line.
Should also lower the price.

If you have to make any changes, ask what color(s) it should be painted.

Re: Hood Ornament

Made it to the foundry this afternoon. Things look promising. Fred is going to try a couple of casts. There are a few questionable areas regarding the draft and how I assembled it. Assuming he is successful next week, I will get a quote for the tooling and casting of 50 parts and go from there.

Stay tuned....

I am also going to be cutting another set of parts out and making another pattern with a little bit different design of the gear cogs and a different font.

"A little bit different design of the gear gogs and the font." You mean like a tiny single cab between the cogs with the logo across the side?

Oh. Actually, I like the fewer cogs better. The design is already simple and elegant and the fewer number, ah, add to that.

I started reading this from the newest post backwards, I even did a search to jog my memory on that way of casting a part, I came to the same site, just a different page
http://www.foundry.ray-vin.com/match...matchplate.htm

With a match plate you could cast them several at a time and save even more $$

I have a friend who owns a foundry here in Cinci, they have offered to let me use their place if I ever need to do any larger castings than I can do in my garage

Cool place to hang out during the winter months

Re: Hood Ornament

Got the pieces for the revised design laser cut yesterday...

http://www.carartbyjohn.com/2012Misc...Pattern2_2.jpg

The 4 holes around the outside of the circle are just to help me align everything when I put it together. They will be filled in before casting.

Have started to assembly them this morning. Maybe start shaping later this afternoon.

Re: Hood Ornament

Waiting to hear back from the foundry on feasibility of casting from the patterns I gave them and then on cost.

I am also just about done with the revised main part pattern that will address the issues we discussed at the foundry.

Should hear back this week still.

I will keep everyone posted.
