Just got home from another bicycle tour. This time my crazy friends and I went from St. Paul back to Detroit. Legs hurting but that didn't keep me from heading out into the garage as soon as I was unpacked to do the first oil change on the rebuilt engine. Oil was sludgy and metal flaky, but except for one or two shavings I didn't see anything that made me excessively concerned. Will have to monitor when I change it again in 100miles or so. Hoping to spend Sunday installing the top for next weeks shows. Need to sort out carb return springs too because I won't be able to reach back and unstick the linkage like I've been having to occasionally when the bubble is in place.

Does it have a remote filter ?

Do NOT use a Fram filter.

I use a sync-link throttle linkage with my dual IDFs.. the return spring on the arm of the butterfly it self wasn't strong enough, so I connected a spring from the arm to the inner side of the fender to pull the throttle shut when my foot isn't on the pedal.. seems to work, I just sometimes forget to disconnect it when pulling the carb..

case is not full-flowed. totally stock 1600 aside from carbs. no bypass filter either. some degree of shiny stuff not too alarming for a fresh rebuild, but will stay on top of oil changes for first few hundred miles to do what i can to help the break in period.

think i am going to make return spring brackets that fasten to one of the manifold bolts. should be a quick and easy job. carbs came with springs but no way to mount them. kinda weird.

return springs figured out, seems to help a lot. still think carbs could be tuned better, but its all good for now.

entertaining my 6yr old neighbor.

size comparison next to my friend andy's miata.

top installed.

cruise to moped monday through downtown detroit a few days ago. Andy took some footage while riding his moped around, have to credit him for the picture.

lots of little details to sort out still, but its more or less complete now. I've trimmed the gasket for the bubble since the last picture. hinges for bubble still need some tweaking to be perfect, but I have it installed in 'safari mode' right now to maximize air flow. works pretty well actually. still need to sort out turnsignals. lost my homemade church key somehow so i made a new one out of a spare transmission hockey stick. had to pull apart engine tin on oil cooler side because cooler was apparently not tightened enough and I had a bit of a leak problem. Also had the accelerator cable slip out of the barrel adjuster while trying to impress the moped guys down on fort street, but it wasn't much trouble to fix and get home.

depending on whether i get a window in the rain today, I'm supposed to drive this thing out to ferndale to be featured on detroit public TV's coverage of the dream cruise.

Have to say no.

Lots going on in past few months but nothing vw related. Gf and I bought new house, kicked out tenants in old duplex and started full renovation. Truck leaking about a quart every hundred miles. Basically I'm super broke and way over worked right now. Zero budget left over for this thing from both the time and money perspectives. Autorama people cashed my entry fee check but haven't seen any confirmation that application was accepted. If I get in it will likely be presented 'in the flesh' still. Apartment reno should be done by end of December and have new tenants lined up for both units in the duplex, so time and money situation should flip positively in a month or so, but then it's gonna be too cold to work on any vw stuff and I still have an engine swap planned for the truck that has probably got to happen asap. Any michiganders want to help me haul a parts truck up from Toledo in a few weeks, lol?
