Default 71 ignition switch failure

These things are 1 year only and mine works, but only if I hold my key between on and the starter engagement... not good for trying to drive! Anyway, I need my innovator fiends, errr friends.

What wires need to be tapped into in the multi-wire harness to use a generic universal 3 position switch? This is that harness that has the signals and other items wired there too.

Thanks for any help!

Ya need a hot wire from the battery or fuse block, and the wire going to the solinoid, and the wire to the coil
Look at a wiring diagram to find the right wires

Mine has the ignition and steering column from a 69, the switch broke a few months ago, so I took the ignition switch from my 66 and put it in, I still need the key to unlock the column, the I use the 66 ignition switch to start it

Well, that was interesting. I sent an electrician friend a picture of what was under my dash vs. the 1971 schematic. He came over, found that they (wires vs schematic) sort of matched, sorted out what was needed, and we now have a universal ignition switch wired in. Now I just have to fix both carbs and then try again. Perhaps I will be able to drive the car sometime this week.

I did something like that in my single cab back in the late 70s, replacing the original switch with one from a 66 Corvair. By then Id swapped in the Corvair drivetrain and figured maybe 12 volts was too much for the six volt system. The Corvair ignition switch is still hanging in there after all these years.

So, tonight, without touching a thing, I now have tail and brake lights. Go figure...
