howdy yall, I guess it's my turn to tell the "masses" a lil about myself. I am a newly wed soldier currently on the downhillslope of my second and last deployment. My baby is a '68 squareback that is currently receiving suicide doors, full ragtop and will get a suby engine when i return to ga.

Just an update on the loooooong process. I left my Square in the hands of a shop owner to do the pans suicide the doors and put a slide back rag top in it while I was in afghanistan.

He has since moved to Kentucky and took my car with him, supposedly to finish it. I have not heard back from him in almost a year and a half now and I know he is big in the aircooled mechanic world so I'm posting this to see if maybe an outside source can either poke and prod him into finishing my car or getting more info on him so I can get my $7500 back.
His name is Dave Unser and his website is called www.veedubdreams.com. He was based out of jacksonville, florida. He moved back to his home town in Kentucky. I know this isn't ezactly the best way to update my build but Its more a cautionary tale to others. Thanks for reading

I fainally got her back and been so busy with the little stuff i failed to post a pic of my car and my new house for you guys here so here it is:

Now all I half to do is rebuild/replace engine, rebuild/replace trans axle, fix/replace interior panels, paint the inside to match the outside, and so on and so on. I've missed the feeling of being able to go home after a long day and tinker.

Just an update: I've driven my car maybe 200 miles since my last post. found out the clutch is getting washed with oil. oh well cause soon and very soon I'm pulling the entire pan off with engine and trans attached and selling it along with the suby stuff. I now have an '88 Nissan 720 that is already notched and bagged in the rear so I'm just gonna take the frame and weld it to the newly purchased mustang front k-frame with 347ci and Tremec combo and put the whole thing under the body of my car and rework the rear quarters to fit 10 wide rims and frame on ground clearance. Wish me luck!!

well all the mustang stuff fell thru, can't blame him tho he made double what i was gonna give him for it. I did however pick up a couple more goodies:

1997 vortec 350 with 600-650 eldelbrock on a high rise dual plane aluminium gm intake, a 6 lug '70 c-10 12 bolt rear w/posi and 410's, dual compressors, tank, valves and front bags for the airride. Got my rear rims all cleaned up and tires mounted.

My plan is still to find a decent front suspension and graft it onto the truck frame, maybe an 80's or 90's stang with 4 lug to really confuse people. I am doing a little digging into a cantilever style rear suspension instead of the usual 4 link so I can get more travel. I want to lay the frame on the ground at full droop but not drag the whole car over speed bumps.
Just for clarification when I'm done my car will be front v-8 engine RWD.

I got alot done with the donor truck. I got the doors, hood, fenders, bumpers, and interior out. Then started

off the front core support till the sawzal died. gonna rent a plasma torch on payday and finish that job

I know the rules: no pics it didn't happen.

Well I guess an update is in order. I last worked on the truck frame in aug last year been so busy with my daughter and spending time with her I've just been putting off the project.
Here's the problem I now have: I have the truck, v-8, and 12 bolt posi in a storage unit that runs me $200 a month and its adding up. My wife has been on me since last summer to atleast get it running but I blew up the engine and couldn't find a decent one, and that excuse worked great till last weekend when I met up with Tattooed Pariah at Bugout 77, and I got back into the frame of: FUCK IT I'M DRIVING IT!!
There was an awesome square there on the strip that ran 6.986 and hell it was VW POWER!!

So I went looking for a type 3 engine and damn if I didn't find one on Samba, he only wanted $1000 for it with no carbs or intakes

so I agreed with a couple guys on here that an upright motor is easier and cost effective for what I want.
I poked around and put a wanted ad up looking here, the samba (asses), and even Ebay, but nothing in my price range. So I took my chances on craigslist. Boom found a pair that have been sitting for a while but should be decent cores, $200. I came back and thanks to your hard work and awesome threads I was able to figure out that the SP is from a 65 bus 1500, The DP is a dual relief dual port from 71-72. Sadly both engines have been seized and I've not tried to break them loose. The SP has a chunk missing from the distributor "stand" the DP has some erosion on the back top of the case where rain run off dripped from the dog house.
My plan is to sell all the v-8 stuff including truck, keep the air bags and stereo stuff and use whatever funds I get to buy a rebuild kit from carcraftstore.com ($1375 for everything but carbs and case.) To build a nice 1776-1914. then

and enjoy it!

Now most of you here know I'm by no means knowledgeable about up right cooling or even air cooled in general

so any and all help or conversation would be greatly appreciated.

Well Those 2 engines are a bust just gonna pull them apart for practice.
Good news is:
I finally talked my buddy into selling me his AS21 long block.

Pictures to follow! Best part is he bought it with some airframe parts on the cheap and sold it to me for his purchase price $300.00

And he wanted the good parts from the other 2 to make a buggy engine I just need to tear them down.

Now I have a decent dual port long block to start from.

I'll just be keeping it stock for now so I can enjoy it and maybe pull it out the winter for enlargement.

Side note what is the most important steps I need to do to make it run. Check crank smooth rotation and end play. I would rather not split the case, unless necessary. I'll pull the jugs and clean heads check for cracks then rings, distributor w/plugs wires, carb(s), clean intakes, new fly wheel, install clutch and pressure plate? What else?

well I guess I've missed updates here so here goes.
got the exhaust in a good place and bought a cherry bomb glass pack to keep it nostalgic.

got the support set up done now to finalize the piece I'm actually using.

I mocked up the oil filter location and adaptation to engine

Last Friday I took the case halves to the machine shop to get very clean maybe even glass beaded. Also got almost all the parts together for the rebuild so maybe end of march test fire. Wish me luck.

Finally got something to update!!

So far since june 15th: I've installed new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, new shoes & pads, new clutch & throttle cables, I got the Corvair engine running last Tuesday,

and today I finally got the exhaust all

and installed.

The volume didn't change because it's a cherry bomb.

I also fabbed up the brackets to mount my dual air compressors and the tank.

Soon as I get the new flex brake lines for the rear I can put wheels on and test it out.
