Thumbs up Re: Motorcycle Thread

Noticed a film crew and a wicked rat rod hanging out at Mitch Bergeron's custom chopper shop, which is only a couple doors down from my work. I had to be nosey and see what the commotion was about. Turns out he was selected to be on CMT's "Chopper Challenge" who came from Nevada (assuming since the license plates on the film crew's car was from Nevada) to film.

I took a picture of the rat rod (actually a whole bunch but since this a motorcycle thread theres a link at the bottom of this post for the rest of the pics of the rat rod) and a pic of the bikes that were in front of his shop.

Here's the rat:

I didn't get any good pics of Mitch's shop since I didn't want to interrupt the filming but I took a quick pic of the bikes, and a camera man in the background:

Here's more pics of the pick-up

Today I finally took the bike on the street and burned off any carbon on the plugs. I'm definitely impressed how well it runs and how quick it is for 30+ year old bike. I'm going to do s'more riding around tonight to kill some time.

Here looks today with a bobbed fender, Lucas taillight and some blinkers:

I think it needs a larger diameter (18") rear wheel (16" on there now) to give it more of a euro cafe look.
Whaddaya think?

very cool sheridan! i think a 18" rear wheel would look better on it for sure. that's why i gathered up the stock (but disc) wheel for a future swap. you could probably unload that 16'er on the jockey journal to some chopper dood. heck, if you're up for some big time shit, get a pair of acronts and lace up the stock hubs with some s.s. spokes. it's not hard to do. it's nice to hear that it's terrorizing the streets again.

I welded up a set of custom pipes for a friend's Triumph Friday night. I didn't get pics but I will take some next time I'm over there. It's actually the second set for this bike. The first ones stuck out too far.

yamaha xs650 ...rumour is that its pretty quick

actually I don't know if its just a fancy engine stand or a display item or what but there is no sign of an attempt to make it functional. Sure makes ya do a double take at first though.

Thanks Paul. Feels good to be riding again. I was hoping to just get a rim and spokes and lace it up with the stock hub. Should work, right?

Clue me in on what the deuce these are: acronts

No luck on google.

i spelled it wrong, they're akronts. it's a brand name of aluminum rims. pretty much the standard for cafe wheels. you can also get did or borani rims but akront is the larger name.

you can get stainless steel spoke kits and rims from buchanan.

Paul, the web site helped a bunch although I don't know much about ordering the rims. I really really want to throw a 19" rim on the rear to match the front and also with similar matching tires. 19" might be a tad extreme but I dig the look and me being 6' 2" could probably still reach the ground.

Does anyone have any good info/ advice on ordering spokes and a rim that will match the hub? I'm seriously damned clueless when I stare at all the numbers on the site.

well guys, my VW has been on hold because i have ben working on this bike so much, so here is it:
I finally got to ride her for he first time this weekend. i need to finish some things up but it was awesome!! I brought this bike home in boxes!

In all her glory.

Here is a good view of the stripes.

Cockpit view

You might be able to see the green a little bit better here.

I saw these grips at the store, total cheese, but I love 'em

I originally did the gauge housing in black, but I really like that bronze from the wheels, so i had to take them apart and redo it.

Starts on the first or second kick usually! Still needs some tuning though.

Here I go around the block!

Sorry that was a lot of pics.

they should be able to help you on what to order. you'll want a rim that is drilled for whatever hub you're using. from there you'll need the correct length spokes. they should be able to tell you what you need.

building the wheel is the easy part. you can put it together so it runs out decent and take it to a shop to true and tension. or you can do it all at home. i used to just use the forks on my bike to true the wheels i built for my mountain bike. it's not perfect but it's close.

Just heading out the door to go for my final road test. If there is any surplus in the VR Mojo Bank I could probably use some (not a lot, just a little ) I'll report back in a few hours.
