Man I just love the mythbusters! But naturally, I have an different take on the 'table cloth pull.' This would involve one of the Cafe bikes featured in this thread, four bikini models, jello, a blue tarp, and 67 feet of clothline rope.

Extinguishers

The extinguisher that you have strapped to the roll bar or transmission tunnel is functionally useless. End of story.

This is certainly a case where bigger IS better.

Referring to the fire classifications above can help you choose the appropriate extinguisher, but in general for most people an ABC is adequate. When in doubt call your local Fire Department they will be more than happy to assist you in answering any questions.

Ideally there should be an extinguisher at every door of the garage. Why?

In the case of a fire the FIRST consideration should ALWAYS be escape. ALWAYS! Once you are safely at or through the exit, you can then take the time to better evaluate from a distance whether you can safely attempt extinguishment AFTER calling the fire department.

Yes I said after.

Calling the Fire Department is number two after evacuation. Fire grows and spreads far quicker than you can imagine. And unless you are skilled, often, attempts at extinguishment can actually spread the fire.

Get the boys on the way, then if you can safely attempt extinguishment do so, NEVER ALLOWING THE FIRE TO GET BETWEEN YOU AND THE EXIT.

Even if you successfully extinguish the fire, it is best to let the professionals, confirm extinguishment and ensure that there hasn’t been any fire spread.

Do NOT be embarrassed to call 911. That’s what the guys do! Calling them as soon as possible keeps you, your family, your house, and THEM safer!

Other Fire Control

There are often some other options available when a fire does start. Referring above to the science of fire, removing one or more of Heat, Oxygen, or Fuel will extinguish a fire.

AFTER CALLING 911 if safe to do so, and AFTER all people and pets are safely outside...

Can of rags on fire? Close lid, protect hands, and safely remove from garage.

Puddle of fuel on fire? Smother in kitty litter, or soil.

Car on fire? Close hood, (and if possible, calmly, thoughtfully roll the vehicle out of, and away from the garage. If you can really keep your wits about you, don’t slam the hood shut, it will assist the fire department when they arrive.

NEVER USE WATER TO EXTINGUISH A BURNING LIQUID OR AN ENERGIZED ELECTRIC APPLIANCE!!!


On the Road

First pull safely over to the side of the road.

Yes call 911

Remain calm. Unlike on TV your car isn’t going to explode. (For interest sake any ‘explosions’ heard at car fires are usually the tires).

Now if you have an extinguisher you ARE going to try and use it. Honestly it’s not really worth the chance of burning your hands and face as you attempt to open the hood, and it is VERY unlikely to be a successful venture. Bugs may be at an advantage here however.

So my advice, remove family and belongings, make sure you take your clothing if it is cold and or raining, and keep yourselves as far from the roadway as possible. Your greatest risk is no longer the fire but an ensuing collision.

And keep upwind of the vehicle. The prevalence of plastics, and upholstery releases EXTREMELY dangerous smoke.

Keep uphill of the vehicle, often the gas tank will melt, and flaming fuel will run downhill.

Just a few things that were glaringly missing.

I've been planning to mount my battery in the compartment originally intended for the starter on my CB550, but looking at it now, the battery's pretty dang close to the cooling fins on the back of the cylinders. Like within a half inch. You folks think this will cause cooling issues? I can post pics if it will clear up what I'm saying.

This space was originally left open for a reason; possibly for cooling air circulation, possibly because it was below the carbs (don't want overflow gas on electrical components, etc.)

maybe if you could get a picture of what you're talking about? if you think the engine might have cooling issues then the battery is probably gonna have heat issues.

not sure how different the 550's are from the 750's but if it's anything like my 750, i wouldn't do it that way.

I thought about the battery heating up too... especially considering it is a sealed battery. I thought the site meant AGM, but they were just talking about sealed maintenance free.

engine cooling shouldn't be a problem. I'm still worried about battery heat though. If you decide that you want to do it, pick some of this:

That and then make a battery cover to shield it from any gas that may leak.

I think you should be good after that.

Yeah, after looking at it more, I decided against it. It's going to look half-assed as well as possibly cause issues. After a bit of standing around looking stupid (nothing new) I figured out a way to mount it where the lift stand (whatever it's called) used to be. I'll post pics later.

I'm with you lowheat, don't really dig the marbling for this... I personally like the layout tape better. To each his own, I suppose.

I know it would kill the flatness of the black but it may look a lot better if the pieces were clearcoated to make the marbling "pop" and give it depth.

I agree with what you all are saying... I wanted a bright color on stripes, they didin't want it to stand out... Let's see what it looks like all together, I'll post a pick when they get it built.

I may end up replacing the carburetors on my '550. The '77, as I mentioned before, was apparently a one year only deal on the carbs, which means that the rebuild kits are $70 each. The bike has four carbs.

Fortunately, the carburetors off of a '73-'76 550 will fit, and the kits are around $15 each. A local graveyard has a bunch of sets laying around, but the owner's already pulled the carbs off the cycles, and I have no idea how to differentiate between the '73-'76 and the '77. Anyone know of obvious differences, part numbers, anything I can identify it by?

I'm still having trouble with one carburetor overflowing; I think the float may be saturated. Tomorrow I'm going to let it bake in the sun for a while, then give it a light coat of glyptol. That should seal it, and hopefully fix my problem.

I considered making my own manifold to adapt a pict carb from a VW to the bike. I'd need to make a custom set of jets (no big issue) and figure out how to position a downdraft to work in place of a side-draft... It'd be wicked cool, but a guy I know who used to race bikes said they run a lot better with individual carbs.
