There is no way to sync the thread on the knob with the thread on your shifter shaft so that the letters ends up oriented correctly if you just tighten it down.

This is way I provided a locking nut for those that ordered one of the 3 standard VW thread sizes. You thread the nut on the shaft until it bottoms out, thread the knob on as far as you can and then back it off until the letters are oriented the way you want, hold the knob there and then tighten the locking nut up against the bottom of the knob.

This is pretty standard for shift knobs that have a pattern on them that needs to be oriented.

If you ordered the knob with the Empi thread size or any other oddball thread size, you are on your own to get a locking nut.

If yours is 180 degrees out, you might be able to take the knob off and rotate it 180 degrees when you restart it and you might get lucky and have it closer.

Jeez. This reminds me of a neighbor who paid me to install a Hurst Mystery Shifter (floor shift) in his son's '58 Ford (3 speed stick with overdrive) hardtop. The kit came with a round black knob. So far so good.
The kid then bought a Hurst T-handle and 'installed' it himself.. The dad had me come back over and check my installation, because the T-handle would only, "fit sideways." The look on the dad's face when I took the handle off, threaded on the stop nut supplied with the handle, then put it back on at the desired angle, was as they now say, priceless.

Have I mentioned the 2 mpg increase in my Single Cab's gas mileage since installing my Genuine Volksrod Shift Knob?

To be fair I have a Hurst shifter and I never got a locking nut.... however maybe a stack of washers will help.

All the Hurst shifter knobs I have had over the years (still have a few left) had a set screw in them, just make sure you put something in before the set screw so it doesn't screw up the threads on the shifters threads

I got the knob on straighter second time it was 90 degrees off managed to get an extra 80 something more good enough for me

The Hurst shifter I was installing was in 1966, and I was sixteen. Now its a 'few' years later, and I'm still chuffed to bits with a new VR knob for my SC.

No idea. It would all depend on the thread size of the shifter handle. I provide the shift knobs with one of three thread sizes:

7mm x 1.00
10mm x 1.50
12mm x 1.50

or just a simple pilot hole.

With the threaded ones, I also provide a matching lock nut. With the pilot hole you are on your own.

if i can get off my ass long enough to figure out a good threading, maybe i'll order a second one.. 002 is still sitting on my computer desk with just a pilot hole because i haven't found a machine shop i trust in Virginia.. also haven't looked for a machine shop, but yea...
