So I was looking for a good photo to post up here..... and couldn't find it.

Anyway, I was wondering why Ray-Dean signed back in after a loooong hiatus.

Yes, he is a year older.

Happy Birthday Ray-Dean!!!

Now you are 41 - and hopefully a little smarter and probably a little slower!

And say hey to the boys and Jamie!

Just older and wiser. I've been taking care of other things. All three boys in baseball, two in football this year, coaching and serving on the boards for both sports, renovating the baseball fields, continuing work on the house, and doing a lot of research and learning on another project.

You know, the usual...

That's it? That's all? Well Happy Birthday...though from my perspective, you're a 'young fart.'

Yup. And all these younger than me facts have no idea who I am, so there's no surprise in the low response count.

Besides, as you get older, the day means less and the years mean more, or some sentimental shit like that...

Thanks again.

I figure that after all this time bullshitting around, I really wanted to learn how to "hot rod". I'm not building rods at the moment because I saw the need to take a step back and reevaluate what true hot rodding was compared to what it now is.

So I built a small forge. Learned as much as I could about metallurgy. Then I got a small tool makers lathe and learned to refine my rough castings into usable parts. Then I toyed with casting my own intake and a couple pistons. Nothing that I would run in a vehicle and consider it "reliable", but I have a much firmer grasp on what I feel died with our craft. I know have not only the knowledge to do these things, but also the ability to accept that I still don't know 1/8 of what my father's generation did and the generation prior to his. Yes, we have far greater technology, be few of us poses the knowledge, ability, or will to apply ourselves.

Yeah, I've been working on a huge, ground up, vintage hot rod rebuild, but the vehicle is me.

I had the honour to be able to visit a horseless carriage society club house here in mn. A place where they build these cars from the ground up. You can't go to autozone and get parts for a 1916 franklin... So most of the parts they manufacture onsite. When we were there they were building a car from the ground up. They only had the axles and a speedo and the engine case.. Nothing else. Those type of people have the old knowledge of this stuff. So maybe digging around and seeing what the7 do there may help. . Still there's alot of cool information. Some of my favourite stories are people who took model A engines and took heads from a chevy v8 motor Cut them in half machined them and made Overhead cam mods for those motors with bored out engines and modified pistons.

I have a text book from 1966 that explains how to REPAIR stuff and machine stuff. Its no wonder they were able to work on cars. (it even explains cam regrinding ) That text book is the main reason why i want to get a early fifties straight 6 mopar or a corvair motor because all of those are covered in the book! old school knowledge is quite cool, and I have a strong appreciation for that type of stuff.

Sounds like a great place. Funny thing about this is that it took me totally walking away, and picking woodworking up again for me to get to the point where it did.

Ray Dean,
Understood. I spent this morning here at work pounding away on a 200lb anvil and all I could think was, "who in my generation actually knows how to really use one of these?" I was also thinking, "I need to sneak this thing home!".

My next shop tool is a mini-lathe.

Again, happy birthday youngster!

Um, in the spirit of the 'really old' part of this thread, I was getting ready to celebrate my 10th Christmas when you were born....

Speaking of old school hot rodding. I run a Mallory dual point in the single Cab's V8. A Last Spring, a kid from down the street stopped by on his late rice rocket to see why I had the deck up and was doing to the engine. I was setting the points. When I explained what I was doing he asked what points did. When I explained that he asked why I didn't run electronic ignition. Hmmm. I asked if he'd seen the movie War of the Worlds. He had, so I told him about the Martins sending a EMP which fried the new ignition systems and that I would still have a running truck (plus a couple of my older motorcycles) after the invasion, while he pushed his bike around. Since then when he rides by, I get a really strange look. Heh, heh.

Nice.

And by the way, the comment about "youngsters" was not referring to age. It was geared toward join date. I'm young. Hells to the yeah. You're only as old as you feel and my wife's 10 years younger than me, so I feel 30 all the time......

Yeah.. I'm a young one period. Yet I'm an oddity here. Not many people my age have a liking of old cars. The fact my Fiancee loves old cars too really makes us very odd indeed. We both share similar mindsets towards modern stuff.. kindle funny we found each other actually: funny:
