Before Shot

We will start off with what the 1970 VW bug original state.









All in all not too bad shape with minimal rust and the engine runs pretty smooth. A few issues with wheel bearings and brakes that will have to be addressed. But first let's warm up the grinder.

And so the strip-down begins









The previous owner threw in quite a few extra parts which is a nice bonus.

And the car has a full set of "Shamrock Glass" which is a trademark signature that the beetle was assembled in Ireland. Next to the glass ids a small shamrock is placed to identify the process.

After over a year of research, watching videos and a 100+ hours of reading forums with a dash of procrastination. Oh, and the ever nagging "should I cut up a perfectly good classic beetle..."

It is done. No going back now.

I hope that glass was able to stay intact. I have a bunch of Original glass in my trailer. I'm keeping encase I see somebody needing it and they want it for a nice price.

Hey Dr. H. I wrapped all the extra glass up, especially the shamrock glass. Might have to hoard the shamrocks for that mysterious 'nice price' :)

I'm using the Fernon Chop method so the back window will stay the same. Might use perspex for the side and cut a new piece for the windshield.

**NEWBIE DISCLAIMER**

I'll insert my "newbie disclaimer" for the VRod vets out there. This is my first attempt at a custom vehicle of any sort so when I delve too deep into the most basic stuff take your turkey baster and glaze over said part And if you are a newbie and get something out of it, muy bien.

Plus, any incorrect terms or phrases are open season to correction

Braced & Cut Cut Cut

I got ahead of myself in my last post. Forgot about the braces for the inside of the car to keep the original shape. I went down to my local welder/metal supplier and purchased a 9' length of 3/4" square steel tube. Straight forward enough, braced in at the B-posts and dash, levelled and welded in.

Fat Chicks and Sushi Samuri

First and foremost I have to give a big thanks to Eric (Fernon) over at Fat Chicks and Mopeds.

The amount of different methods shall we say with various cuts and inlays. Maybe for a salty VRod dog but it made my liver quiver. Lo and behold I came across FC&M and it was like stumbling into El Dorado. All that shines and glitters. If you haven't paid them a visit check it out. Very informative and great pics. Any who, with my trustee expert apprentice we did the ol' Sushi Samurai on the tops and zipped the ginsu along the 'A', 'B' & 'C' pillars.







Yes, the cut along the 'C' pillar isn't pretty and no I only had two beers officer.

Oh boy here it comes! I was gonna chop the roof off of mine and do a creighton style chop.. Basically combine fernon but take a small glass windshield and slant it back. Some hotroder named Creighton did it to a new bug back in 1956! so yeah one of the, if not the first, chopped bugs. the only reason why I didn't is because I bought my 1966 parts bug and it came with everything I needed to build a nice hotrod.

Still I look forward to your chop!

Just curious i've seen other members get worried about the dreaded mot? How is it where you are? Just curious.

I'll shut up and let you get back to the chopping

Some Wind Last Night

Took her clean off. Hurricane force winds targeted the bug and did the work for me.



Okay, we cut the A,B & C posts. Continually taking reference from FC&M, trying to judge where and what to cut.





Managed to get the top off in one piece and did you know that VW stuck mini triangular pillows in the body by the engine compartment? Guess if you get tired on a long trip or maybe it's 1970's air bag technology just waiting to be moved to the front.Why VW never marketed this handy fact/tip is beyond me. Okay, okay it's undoubtedly sound proofing of some sort but pillow/air bag is so much cooler.

You can see them tucked away in this pic.



Still wingin' it and each step is a learning revelation.

Yeah thanks. I look forward to the chop too but trying to blindly go where many have gone before. Having fun though, WE ARE GOING TO F-ing WALLY WORLD & WE WILL ENJOY IT

Our equivalent to the UK's MOT here in Eire is the NCT. Luckily they have exemptions for vehicles 40+ years. Insurance companies get a little fussy but all they have to know is that it is a 1970 Beetle. "I can not tell a lie..." Thanks George.

Itchy Sawzall Trigger Finger

With the top off let's try to lower it.

Here's the line up of post sections cut. Primarily the A & B posts. Taking it ever so cautious I only took about 2.5" off to see how she lined up.



Found out not so good if you don't cut the C nether regions. This is the area that perplexes me. Trying to keep it level yet not take too much off. So grind a little, set it on, check, take it off, and repeat 50+ times.



70VR HANDY TIP #1

Car Ramp Prop

Whilst trying to check and grind over and over. Moving the top on my own was a real pain. I eventually took a car ramp I had and stood the smaller end up in the bug and let the top rest on the bigger end of the ramp. Worked a treat. So all I had to do was lift the top up, prop the ramp under it and grind away.

She's coming along nicely. A good thing is that you and "Alfred" will soon be in top physical condition from all the lifting. Just in time for all the sanding....

DON'T ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME KIDS


Now remember I posted a NEWBIE DISCLAIMER earlier so I'd like to cash that in.

I was grinding away on the back end of the patient and came to the firewall. How the sparks flew.

The engine is still in the car and without thinking about the backside of the fan house, with the opening and all... Well once the sparks stopped there was a little smoke and it seemed to continue from the back of the housing. And was increasing!

Then I realised my folly, armed with bottles of water trying to get to the source before it got out of hand. I managed to stop the smoke. Turned out that some of the fine-hair liner strips on the firewall got lodged by the grinder into the cowl opening.

Moral of the story - take your engine out or plug up the housing before the grinding starts.

Tips/Advice on Lid Hinges


When taking the top off I left the back apron intact. Leaving strips to slide back into the original space as before.



As I'm closing the gap on the post sections I've notice that the hinges for the back lid are resting on the fan housing.



I have some ideas of what I could do but if anyone out there has dealt with this I would really be grateful for any advice, pics, tips, etc.

You are 100%. I tried it initially and it shook the hell out of the firewall and I opted for the grinder. I should have persevered with it.

Uh, Houston...


I have been working away to try and get the B's to touch and keep the overall stance level without any pitch.



I removed the full section on the A posts.



The C posts did not butt up but originally had the same angles when cut.



Yet the B's had another inch to go.



This had been stumping me for a while. I got it sorted only after humming & hawing way too long. All the while I had the answer in front of me via Fat Chicks & Mopeds.

All will be revealed in the next post. Time to hit the hay.

I ran into the same problem with the decklid hinge on my chop. Really want to have the decklid lay flat, short of changing my doghouse fan housing, not sure what to do

How much of the 'valley' of the hinge mounts do you need for the lid to flip up? I was thinking that you could run some flat material straight across the hinge mount high enough to miss the shroud, losing the lower part of the curve.
