I don't know if you'd ever be able to find it, but before Ray Flueger founded Flowmaster, he made mufflers of the same design and called them "Fluegers". They were large and square (no fancy equipment then) flat black, with chambers and baffles. When he started, he only made mufflers for VW's. My dad went to school with Ray, and was pretty good friends with him. We always had Fluegers on all our bugs (and my dad was a pretty big VW guy). Let me tell you, unless you have heard these mufflers on a bug, you have no idea how good they sound. My buddy put a set we have at the house (not for sale) on his built 1835, and it sounded like a V8! Not like a 350 or 302, but like a flathead v8. Deep, throaty, and kinda raspy. I'm eventually going to run one on my car, but I want something cool for a header. You maybe able to find something on ebay, but you're better off finding some at a swap meet. Look for a plain black muffler, no writing or script on it, that mounts kind of like a stock muffler. They are a little bigger than a stock muffler too. If you can find them well worth the price, and they will be $$$$. Other than that, you could put a Flowmaster Fatboy on it, look at the VW mags at the fatboy header and muffler setup, and you could just cut the muffler off and use a small flowie instead. Good luck!

when you say "mounts kind of like a stock muffler" , do you mean it has 4 inlets that fit to the heads and heater boxes like a vw muffler or do you mean one inlet and one outlet like a regular car muffler ?
or does it mount to a 4 into 1 merged header like a glasspack ?

It mounts like a stock muffler, connecting to the heater boxes and bolts to the exhaust ports on the head. It looks like a squared off stocker. He was working on one to mount on a header, but founded flowmaster and lost interest in vw's.

My father in law gave me an old 2-bolt flanged glasspack muffler he had in the rafters. It has a green sticker that says 'Flugger' with a Green Bug (with teeth) on it. Says 'Petaluna California' on it, with 'Quality, Ecology, Performance' towards the right side.

Is this what you're talking about, or is it a Knockoff?

Sure, I would have last night, but the wife took the camera with her on Vacation. She gets back today. This muff was NOS when my father-in-law gave it to me, I've only used it to tune buggy engines with bobtail style exhausts.

It's not square, though. It's round, about the same diameter as a Cherry Bomb, with a chrome tip.

It might be an original EMPI glasspack from the 1960s when Joe and Darryl ran EMPI. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It's similar to the one the Milf is holding in this PIC, but it is black, with the sticker.

My wifes muff has been broken for too long now, but the return policy on mine is if I take mine back I will have to pay every month for 18 years and half of every thing I own so I guess I will live with a broken muff, Thats what tittie bars and Tijuana were made for....

That might be a flueger, but it's not the style I'm taliking about. After he did those, he did the chamber style muffler. Probably worth a chunk of cash though.

The Father-in-law pronounced it 'Flooger' also. Here's a couple of pics. And a close-up of the sticker for LilBill. So, you think this Flugger's worth anything? If so, I'll sell this Flugger and get me a new fluggin exhaust for my '67.
