Ratty rear safari

I'm making a rear safari for my Ratty Super..
I have the frame pretty close to done and need to come up with a side support, so I can ditch that piece of PVC holding it up now, lol
Anyone got any cool ideas, would like something unique

Unique? Hmm, how ‘bout a pair of helium balloons with hand a painted ‘VW?’

Okay, how about a pair of coil springs maybe 5/8” or so in diameter; eight to ten inches long with a fitting at each end for pivoting. Extended, the springs support the open ‘safari. You push in the springs centers to close. Only problem might be the springs in the way when c folded.
Or, tubing with a pivot at each end that slide together when closed. When extended to open, a clip slides into holes to hold it. More than one ‘hole could allow for more that one opening height. Also serve as a ‘lock.

Another thought is the small lift devices used on the Campways bed cover’s rear hatch on my ‘99 Ranger. These are a STABILUS lift-o-mat. They are small, light and I would guess come in various sizes for different loads.
