no prep but i had tried Testor's enamel paint pen before and my mayo turned into honey dijon. SOOOOO i didnt remove it , but sprayed over top of it. i think UV and heat kill the color within a day or two, so whatever lasts a day will last a week..... month.... who knows. i might have done all this in vain.

ive had mine done that way for about a year now. resprayed twice. the biggest probs i have had are cracking due to tire flex. i did one set with an adhesion promoter made for rubber and plastic. another set straight onto the rubber after scuffing with 220grit. so far the second set(no promoter) has held up the best.
you will notice some yellowing of the paint due to the rubber, and sun. but it looks good as hell and you cant argue with the price.

ive found laying on thin coats, letting it set in the sun or in some sort of heat, and then REALLY laying the paint on super thick for 2 or so coats makes it last.. the biggest thing, make sure the tires are absolutely clean before you spray them. use westleys whitewall bleach and spray them off.

pimp wagon!

yeah the real trick is the oil leaches out of the rubber and into the paint, turning it yellow:( second is the flexing.. paint will eventually start splitting a bit...

there ARE 'rubber' whitewall paints that are specifically designed for doing this, but a little pricey (I recall it was like $50 a quart)

at that price might as well spend the $50 on some whitewall inserts

Any update on longevity? I'm looking to whitewall my scooter, and don't want to spend a mint.

longevity depends on how well you prep the tire, and how well you keep it inflated. i had my tire go flat on my bug a couple times, paint stuck very well, but it started to crack pretty badly after the 2nd or 3rd time. but i only had an issue with the paint turning yellow after the first time i painted them. (3 weeks or so ) . took them off, taped, and re-sprayed in a couple hours and they were good as new, lasted about 6months before i blew a tire and had to get new shoes all the way around. but the paint on the old tires still looks great.

and if you change your mind down the road. 3m surface conditioning pads mounted on a drill work wonders for taking the paint down to the rubber again.

I could have given you A complete brand new set. My parents got a screaming deal on an 09 Cadillac DTS that the dealer had fitted with 20's. The car came with the stock wheels and the 20's, so we sold them but the guy that bought the wheels didn't want the vogue tires so he had them dismounted and left them behind. My dad finally sold them on craigslist for something like $50 just to get rid of them . Can't say I blame him though. Not my style or my 67 y/o parents either.

NoTw - Thanks for the reply. I had read this thread when it was fresh in June. I wound up getting Ports instead. Now I want to do my scooter. I can get ports for that from UVT, but they are 1 1/8"(my scoot sidwalls are 2"), and wind up being the same price as the good tire paint. Your point about the 3M removal convinced me. If for some reason it doesn't work, I have a way out. I'm imagining acetone might remove it as well. I guess it's off to Walmart.

Has anyone preped them and tried liquid rubber? used to dip tools with and they make a spray,I dont know about white but it could be ordered from an industrial supply, they make paint for everytrhing. This looks very cool, esp. the gangsta whitewalls.

How about Highway paint? You know the stuff they spray to make the white lines on roads... that shiat sticks to everything and you can NOT remove it.

Ok, thanks to this thread, I went ahead and did my scooter. I could have gotten Ports for this, but they would have cost as much as the specialty tire paint, and not the full 2" wide that I wanted. It was a BITCH of a job with the masking. It took hours. I'm satisfied with the results, but next time I'll just buy whitewall tires. Anyhow, I cleaned the sidewall with acetone, and scrubbed hard with a scotchbrite pad. Then I wiped with laquer thinner, masked, and gave a final light wipe. Then I warmed both the paint and the tire, and gave four medium coats. The front has held up perfectly, but after some miles riding in as cold as 12F, the rear has developed some very fine cracks. I probably should check my pressure. Anyhow I'll touch it up with a brush in the spring. No yellowing, although the color did get a bit warmer after a few weeks, which I like.

turned out great.! the fine cracking is to be expected (especially on the rear tire because thats where most of the weight sits), dont stress over it too much, the same thing happened to the set i did. just waited a few weeks and re-taped re sprayed.the top coat filled in the cracks.

those tires look far tougher to do than a vw tire. i followed the parting line of where the side wall meets the tread. makes for a perfect round shape, no dips in the tread to tape over, and the sidewall height is more than big enough. also, the blue painters tape is good stuff ... buuut. its an absolute pain in the ass to use on round shapes since theres no flex and its intended for straight line masking. i see why it took you hours to mask it off.. if you decide to freshen it up down the road pick up some automotive 3m scotch 233+ 3/4" wide tape. you cant miss the stuff. its an odd baby puke green color. but it works wonders for doing tires since its flexible. you can use one piece all the way around the tire instead of little 2-3" sections. doing the tires on the bug i had one completely taped up, masked off and painted in 20 minutes, having the right stuff for the job helps a ton.
