Crack, that's the way we used to do it back in the seventies!(Old fucker alert!) I had a schwinn three speed bannana style bike with a stick shift and typical ape hanger syle handlebars, sissy bar and long bannana seat. We did it the same way all the time with the round, curved tube style forks. We'd chop the extra set just below the head piece. A good source for a nice stretch was 27" ten speeds. They were not quite as curved and longer. Slip them on over the original forks, then rode down the street to the welding shop. May be it's a Maryland thing.

Using 20 inch ones made the forks really curve out front.

New York too. That's the way I extended them as well. By far ten speed forks worked the best Oniy I would drill a hole through everything and run a bolt to hold the forks together I didn't have access to anyone who could weld.

Did it the same way as a kid in Minnesota.....reminds of the one time my brother didn't wait til our dad got home to weld the forks together......he was riding it with them just jammed on there.....decided to do a wheelie.........let's just say it wasn't pretty.

Guess I will post a picture of the only thing I have right now with wide white walls.

thats cool tell him I am very happy with it. I am planning on taking it overseas with me next time I deploy. I might be picking up a bike-e for the wife this weekend. I was going to start commuting to work on it but I am looking for a new house much farther away (can you say 5 acres with large garage?? hoping to get back into the scene after I can get a place to work on the cars without getting harrased by the city. I am thinking about building my own trike also

Thought I'd bring this post back from the dead. Since I can't afford a new project car right now I've been working on a couple bikes.

The first one is a 24" mountain bike that a buddy gave me for free. Everything worked okay on it but it was just a normal look bike, well that and it was purple, so I decided to give it a little make over.

Here's what I started with

Here's how its sitting now. I decided to go with military theme. I only spent like $50 so far on it, most of that was the new seat and tires. I'm going to do some more stencil work on it eventually. I was thinking about putting some accessories on it, like some ammo can saddle bags, whip antenna, old slit style headlight, etc, but now that its painted and back together I kinda like it plain. I tried to clean it up some when I had it all pulled apart by shaving the front brakes and making it a 6 speed instead of 12. Anyways here some pics.

The second bike I picked up at the junk yard for $10. It's a 1974 26" Raleigh girls bike with a 3 speed rear hub. It's pretty rusty and beat up but everything works fine on it, all I did was lube everything up and put some air in the tires. It's actually a really fun bike to ride but the fact it's a girl's bike keeps bugging me so I decided to put it under the knife. I'm thinking about stretching it about a foot and raking the forks a little. I'll have to redo all the cables but they're kinda ragged so it's all good. I was thinking about what to do for handle bars on the cheap and I came up with using the bottom of shopping cart. It works out okay I'll just need to use a bigger neck. Here's a few pics.

This is a bike I built for myself after building choppers for my kids. My son told me that I needed one to ride with them. The bike path along the river has never been the same!

Very cool.
The seat post and clamp need to be black, IMO.

You know, I've always thought they had that boy/girl thing backwards on bikes.
I'd rather have a steel bar as far away from my jimmies as possible.

that was done for strength more than protecting the jimmies. the way they were built was than women wouldnt be as rough on a bike as a guy and that they would wear dresses when riding. the style just kinda stuck

Picked this up at Boeing Surplus. Beat up, yellow, hadn't seen grease for a long time. Took the big 'expediter' basket off of the handlebars and went bare metal on the 'cooler'. I have since taken the dents out of the fenders and lowered them to hug the tires as close as possible. You want a friggin cardio workout?! Ride this unit with 3 cases of beer and ice in it. Similar to pedaling a John Deere tractor!

Yeah, I know but I think I'd rather have a bent frame than cracked walnuts.

Cool bikes. I have three trikes in various conditions that I am going to make choppers out of. I should get started on at least one of them.

I did make a trike then we tore it apart. I have always wanted to build another one. Just need to get off my lazy ass to do it. Its hard enough for me to work on my soapbox car.

I was thinking the same thing but i ran out of black paint and I don't really want to buy another can for 2 little things. I would be worried about the paint chipping off the chrome too. I might ask around and see if I can find somebody that has a black seat post they'd want to trade.
