I have a few questions about your air ride.
What size air line and valves are you planning on using?
Will you use a management system or just a set of switches?
Have you found a spot to put your air tank and compressor?
Will you use more than 1 compressor?
lastly, (for now,) up front, is it getting bags or air shocks?

great job on the car. I dig the drawings of what you`re trying to achieve. the seats are gonna be awesome, the colors, everything. good work.

It varies based on what I have on hand and waht I am making. Most of the body panel stuff is 18 or 20 gage steel. The rear airbag cross bar is two pieces of 1/8" thick angle welded together to make a box section. The bag mounting top plates are 1/4" steel plate on the top cross bar and 3mm thick steel sheetmetal fabricated boxes for the lower mounts on the trailing arms.

Not sure what size the lines are. The ones I have are quite large and braided stainless steel. Don't know if I will use them yet. I have two tanks and two compressors, but will only use one of each on this build. I am only looking to be able to get the car low for cruising and showing and up to a reasonable drive height for our Michigan roads. No three wheeling or other crazy stuff for me. The tank and compressor are likely to end up in the front trunk area.... probably in the spare tire well. I have a digital gage/switch assembly. Not sure if it is a management system or not. Will find out when I hook it all up. These are the parts I bought a few years ago....

Not using all of it, but for $200 for the whole works, it was too good to pass up.

As for the front, I am still noodling on that . I took some parts out to my buddy Mike's place last week. He is an RideTech dealer and installer. We are looking at some ShockWaves possibly with reinforced lower trailing arms and shock mounts and some bag options. Looking to keep the Type 3 components up front including the upper sway bar feature.

$200 is a good deal, especially with braided lines & manifold style valves. Do you think one tank will be enough volume of air? I have a tank either the size of both, or 1 & 1/2 of your tanks, i'm not sure, but I have 2 bags, 2 airshocks & if I lift all together, the compressors kick on, but I like suspension travel. I figure if it's going to move I want it noticeable. Yours might not have as much lift as mine. The toughest part of my setup, was trying to find a place to keep the tank & compressors, (& hide em, or show em off). I used 2 compressors cause I don't want to hear 1 running forever, I'd rather get it over with quick, (besides, if 1 compressor fails I can still get home). Your setup is way cool, & your build looks like so much fun. I'm jealous for sure.

Well, I haven't had much, if any, time for the Sled in the last month or so. Been a little pre-occupied with planning and preparing for our wedding which is this Thursday!

I will get back at it after we get back from the honeymoon in a couple of weeks.

Stay tuned.

OK...I haven't touched the Sled in way too long. Still haven't but we managed to get Sophy and Jill's Ghia down to her brother's place for the winter....

and we got the marriage thing all finished up and our trip to Minnesota for Thanksgiving and working on the cabin. the big cabin projects are down for now...

...so starting this week it is back to the Sled!

Congrats on the marriage and honeymoon John. Having both cars parked somewhere else should free up the garage for ALL of the sled stuff.

Nope....but I did get out there and work on her for a few hours this morning. Felt good to be and metal again.

First order of business was to get the garage cleaned up enough to work and get the Sled out in the open for easy access...

Then I filled in the final areas between the dash and the cowl/body....

and finally I spent a little time fitting, welding, and grinding the filler piece for the recess in the dash around the ignition key. Pretty happy with the result....

Progress!

One of my New Year's resolutions is to make steady weekly progress on the Sled. No more taking months or weeks off from doing anything on her. To get the right start on that plan, I spent several hours today on the garage with the propane heater blasting....

Completed a somewhat significant step....I finished the fabrication/modification to the dash and structure to let me mount the steering column. I can now steer the front wheels with the steering wheel from inside the car.

Here are some pictures....

Started out finishing the edges of the cut-out for the steering column...

Added a brace to stiffen the dash.... Works great, BTW.

Then I bolted in the steering column and tightened down the clamp nut at the steering box after setting the spacing to the dash...

Plenty of clearance to the blinker lever...

Plenty of hand clearance...

View from the bottom. Used the stock front mount for the column and a modified rear mount...

Plenty of room to turn the key...

Should have good vision of the gages...

I also got the rear end of the car up on tall jack stands in order to have better access to start the final fitting and attachment of the rear fenders....the final major piece in this puzzle.

No new fabrication tonight, but I did do some noodling on my latest thoughts for the front airride suspension. My goal is to keep as many of the stock Type 3 suspension parts as possible and to be able to use a shock absorber. I would also like to keep the sway bar functionality of the upper trailing arms/torsion bar.

With this in mind, here is a drawing of my latest plan....

It is a little bigger than I usually post, but it needs to be to be able to read it.

Basically this eliminates the lower torsion bars and replaces each with its own airbag. The airbags would be mounted between a bracket attached to the beam (not shown) and the bag arm shown in yellow. This arm is attached to the inside end of the trailing arm through a custom adapter insert. The added thrust bearing acts on the bushing support already in the beam assembly shown in this picture...

You can see the end of the trailing arm just protruding through the larger hole in the support bracket in this picture.

I will probably weld the adapter insert along with using the shear pin just to make sure it doesn't move.

The drawing is not to scale. Lots of measuring and stuff left to do before fabrication could begin.

What do you think?

Unfortunately, nothing new to report. Has been on hold for the summer as I have been helping my wife kick breast cancer's ass and working on other projects for our cabin in MN and our house here in Dearborn.

But after next week, I plan to jump back in and kick-ass on it all Fall, Winter, and Spring to get it driveable in time for the Type 3 Invasion in June of next year. It is the closest an Invasion will be to SE Michigan for some time to come.

Thanks for the continued interest and stay tuned!
