it will walk you thru everything, with screen shots so you know what you are looking at.
The malewarebytes and the super anitspyware are what I did.

Yep, that's exactly what's happening on my computer. I can't even get past it in safe mode. Crap, crap, CRAP!

The Trojan is in the virus vault in AVG (TrojanHorseCrypt.RTP) but I just seem to have lost some functions on the computer. Does that mean it's still there and active?

This virus is labeled as a generic.Renos virus. One way to get the virus off it to boot into safe mode......restart computer hit f8 while booting and select safe mode. Download and run a program called MalwareBytes. Run a full scan. restart and voila.

However in my experience you will end up reformatting and reinstalling everything......sorry.

You get this type of virus from clicking on hijacked links in forum posts and from myspace/facebook. Not really any way to protect against it other than discretion.

If the infection is too bad it will take over admin/user rights and you wont even be able to log in. The computer will connect to the internet and your machine will be used in sending the virus more places. Just nuke everything. Reinstall and you will have it going again.

I had a problem this last weekend with a similar virus. A "Windows Malware" program said I had 25 infected items and if I "purchase it now!" I can clean my computer. The program was something like Windows AV 2000.
I have Avast installed and it didn't pick it up, but I've had this same virus before and went in and removed it manually.
Can you get into task manager? Right-click on the taskbar and open Task Manager. Go to the processes tab, and look through the files listed for ave.exe
If the file is there great!, If not then I can't help any further.
Once the file is confirmed on your system do a Windows search for ave.exe and write down the details on where it's located. The file I located in the below folder had a longer name but it still contained ave.exe in the name.
example : C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

With mine there was two locations. Reboot in Safemode and browse to those locations and delete the files. Reboot and cross your fingers.

Found some pics on Ebay that I need to save.
Used to be no problem, but now right clicking doesn't work.
They have some Javascript Voodoo going on.

Is it still possible to save pics hosted by ebay ?

I just checked the ebay thread, I can still save a hot linked image there?

maybe screen shot it and crop it down? I've done that on some sites that won't allow saving~ :)

Try this one:

I suspect they have made a change recently.

Just tried Internet Explorer, works fine,
so the problem is with Firefox.

Thanks for the input.

I've had luck in the past saving the screen you are looking at as "save as web page". Then the picks are saved in a folder for you.

Anyone had trouble with Firefox locking up on them ?
Close Firefox, reopen, and it is fine.

Is this a glitch in Firefox, or a symptom of malware ?

Spybot, Ad-aware, Ccleaner, and MRU Blaster
have no effect on this problem.

Any suggestions ?

Firefox does that a lot to me right before they issue an upgrade to the next level.

Yeah, it can be annoying, but Firefox is still far more reliable than Internet Explorer. I tried Apple's Safari also, it's cool and all, but the PC version is pretty buggy... I imagine the Mac version doesn't have that problem

Welcome to the woes if firefox. It has been patched so many times it is becoming a lot like internet explorer. Fate of all browsers...sigh. try goolge chrome. It is pretty fast. Still a little buggy.

You imagine correct. I have no trouble with Firefox or Safari but I am all Mac all the time. I literally have not made physical contact with a PC in like 12 years and, for that, I am thankful.

Time for a new browser.

Need one that doesn't lock up as often as Firefox;
and must able to import all my bookmarks from Firefox.
Fast would be good.

Any suggestions ?

Anyone using Opera ?

I've never had an issue with firefox??

My hard drive crashed a few weeks ago. I've taken it to three different people/ shops and none could retrieve the data. I did get a "clean room" quote of $600.

Time to start saving I guess. There are baby pics and other stuff on there that didn't get backed up. Anyone on here do this for a living?

Does anyone use an online backup service? Recommendations?

That sucks, sorry to hear that. Be sure to back up regularly. That or install and extra hard drive just to store important stuff on.

How did it crash? Do you have another drive with an operating system on it? There are ways to try to recover files yourself if you have another drive you can use. I had to do this myself not to long ago. I bought a 1TB drive for $80 at Staples and used that as my boot drive so i could try to recover the files off the bad drive.
