thought my hard drive had taken a shit.... nope looks like it is the Windowsxp recovery virus.... better than the hard drive going out though i guess.

found a thread to help remove it but i cant even get the comp to boot up. can someone help me find out how i can just wipe the whole thing? I can get windows 7 free from school so i was just going to put that on it instead.

thanks

Anyone here using google Chrome?
I've read enough bad stuff about Firefox and their version 4, now version 5 being shit too. I stopped updating at 3.6.17. It isn't working as fast on the old computer as IE9. It's loading much slower than it used to back on the earlier versions. Reading Chrome is much simpler and faster.
Any user opinions?

I've got Firefox 5, works fine, takes a long time to load.

Have you tried Opera ?

Just watched a couple of their vids, looks better than Chrome. I think I will install it on the old comp to see how it works before switching this one. FF still shuts down when searching google images, I have to go Bing. But it's just getting slower and slower. I was hoping it would get much faster than this after clearing out some memory yesterday but today it's back to the way it was. And they will soon but dropping support for this older version.
If you have opera is there an addon to block ads like in FF? I really like not having those annoying flash ads running.

Christine's PC is defying the laws of reality again...

A few days ago, I came home and noticed it was hung up on the POST screen reporting an invalid ROM and asking if you want to boot from CD..

She hadn't complained about it, so I just ignored it, eventually turning it off..

Today, she powered it on, and it booted just fine... into Windows XP

That's VERY odd to me since I formatted the drive and installed Ubuntu a couple of months ago.

I didn't save anything, I bought her new RAM and put in one of my old harddrives that had been FULLY formatted, then installed ubuntu only, no dual boot..

sounds almost like someone left port 22 open, and someone is screwing with with it. First thing that came to my mind, because I know its been done before

aren't ports configured through software though?

So far here's a basic run down of the timeline.. december, I see she has some crap called "Win Borg XP" installed, so I install a legit Win XP Pro copy.

January, I replace her 256mb ram with 4gb of ram, and her cd drive with a dvd+-r..

sometime in march I think, Win Borg reinstalls itself.

Following that, I take an old hard drive of mine, remove her drive, throw mine in, do a full format, install legit XP Pro again..

Winborg comes back.

I do another full format and a clean install of ubuntu instead.. now it's back to normal XP Pro again..

I told her I'm not gonna touch it cause I don't want to make it worse, but it's bugging me cause it just doesn't even seem possible..

It had it's HDD and RAM replaced, the only storage media left in it is the BIOS chips, but I didn't think those could store shit to reinstall software like that..

and if it was port 22, then that should have been reclosed after the first reinstall of XP I would think..

found it..

the IT guys at work gave me a boot CD that loads up a linux antivirus suite and HD utilities.. her hard drive is reporting as a 120gb drive with only 111gb available. I know the generic numbers (120 in this case) are never accurate, my 2tb drive was actually 1.81tb for instance, but 9gbs seems a bit much.

The software also found 4 hidden partitions.. i'm running the full scan now..

Does anybody have Verizon as their ISP? I can't connect with my FTP program any more. I haven't made any changes as far as my connect settings go. My error message I keep getting is.....

Can't establish connection --> mysite.verizon.net:21 @ Thu Sep 15 11:26:42 2011 (10054-38)
An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

Been all over the verizon site trying to find out if they changed anything but I can't find crap

EDIT: Figured it out....... Verizon took away FTP access unless you pay extra for it.................

Fuck Verizon

I'm trying to clean up a PC for one of my mothers old friends.
Cleared out a ton of crap, AVG, etc, ran CCleaner, Malware Bytes, and SuperAntiSpyware, works MUCH better so far.

One problem, is the graphics on some sites don't display correctly.
For example, google.com , the big Google image doesn't load.
On Jayski.com, the yellow background doesn't appear.
I get the exact same thing in IE and Firefox.

The is on the same connection as our regular machine, which works fine.
Both machines run XP, ours is a Pentium, the crappy one is a Celeron.

Any ideas ?

Got a problem on our machine, Pentium 4 with XP,
the browser locks up every 20-30 minutes.

The cursor will move, but nothing you click on will work.
If you have a video play, the audio will continue, but the picture is frozen.

When this happens, the Windows Task Manager
shows Plugin-Container.exe running.
If i End that Process, then the problem is fixed until next time.
This Plugin-Container.exe doesn't show up normally.

I've run Avast Antivirus in Safe Mode,
Avast Start Up Scan, Malwarebytles,
Superantispyware, and Spybot.
All the definitions are up to date.

Problem started maybe a month ago.

Any idea what is going on ?
