I was under the impression there were at least 3-4 differnt styles of the wide 5 bug slots. The two above plus the wider star with a slightly differnt slot pattern and then the porsche style repops. I guess the samba would be the place to look for that eh?

Pulled her out of the snow last Saturday.

Started with hammering out an old fenderbender from the previous owner... It was nicked all the way from the turnsignal to the wheel arch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1e1Al_GcoE

Then started to drop the engine.

On Sunday I then stripped the engine from some coolingtin.

Sorry. Lots of un interesting pictures..

Unfortunately the engine had a lot of axial play...

The stock engine will require a massive restoration so I decided to take the spare engine that I started working of a couple of years ago. It's a stock 1600 with 88 slip-in's

Got this idea today as I have a set of Type-3 manifolds and a pair of Bus Solex PDSIT 34's...

Should I??

Not for the massive power increase though.. But just because I have the parts and I could do it...

The idea was to still keep the engine mostly stock with stock exhaust etc. But replace the twin fluets with these more breating ones. As the ad says they aids for better cooled engine and gives a more sporty grunt th the sound..

As the brakehoses did fail (42 years old hoses...) last summer I had to crawl under this car for the first time and was able to check the pan closer the past weekend..

Not much done here and even less do do there...

Just replaced the brakehoses and pipes. Still need to replace the fuel hoses too.

Today I decided to replace the driverside hingepins. Just had to manufacture a suitable tool for it too..

It is just a copy of the original VW tool. Works fine. Dont even need to remove the door from the body or even remove the footsteps.

Search for hingepin AND remover in the Samba galleries.

Hey you evil Dutch bastard ( ) How about some pics of the tool when it is not on the car. Or knowing you, how about posting the CAD drawings you built it from.

Hehe.. No CAD drawing here. Just printed some photos of the originals from the Samba galleries and then took the pen and measure and started scratching some lines on the paper.

Then cut the different parts out of the paper and cut out the steelparts with the huge angle grinder..

Real oldschool manufacturing..

I can take some pictures of the parts when I go to the garage next time.

Did the search thing and found what I was looking for. I was trying to see what kind of pin was pushing up the hinge pin.

Just a removable pin in the lower jaw.

You need several different lengths as the jaw movement is not enough otherwise. I needed 3 different lengths for mine.

Here's a box of an original tool.
