bob fenders for volksrod beetle

Hi guys im currently building (driving build) a 64 vw beetle volksrod. im a big fan of the fenderless look, gloss black, dumped with big arse white walls and its all attainable for me relativly easily with the exception of the fenderless part, here in australia we have to run fenders. what i was thinking about was some small bobber/hotrod style fenders, attatched to the axle housings via a bracket so they almost sit on the wheels and dont really stand out. only thing is i havent seen any beetles so far with this set up, does anyone have any pics or advice to get give me some fabrication ideas? ive never done a project like this before.

There are a couple in here that have the close fenders, I can't remember who at the moment. They do this over in the UK I think too due to regulations.

My names Christopher im a 25 year old from sydney australia. Im currently driving a 64 beetle, decent body however pan is slowly rotting. its my first vw but previously ive had a 1970 HG holden that i put about 35g into and sold for 1/3 of that, a couple of turbo nissans and an alfa romeo.... the beetle is so far my favourite its an unreal little car, so much fun to drive, i wish i had bought one earlier.

If this site had existed when i was shopping for my hg i garentee i would have bought a bug instead, some of the cars you guys are building are insane!!!

oohhhh yeah that canberra bug is very nice, those front fenders are spot on, however id want somthing similar on the back too, id like to run about a 205 on the rear and somthing a tad taller, really get that old school rod look cranking mate!

I saw this on in a Street Rod magazine years ago in a section where artists draw up some renderings. A Deuce roadster had front fenders from the front of an Harley Electraglide and they were awesome!!!! I remember thinking front fenders from a 40's or early 50's Indian would even be cooler....Down under Im sure you might find a couple....cut and paste some in Photoshop and see what I mean...

this is going to sound funny but have you tried a trailer supply store?the fenders that i used on my 6x8 trailer for whatever to tow behind the truck hug the wheel perfect ond they even have about a 1 1/2 lip on both sides.i used one on my motorcycle back tire.had to narrow it bout 2 inches.i bought a pack of small magnet to put under it when i made the brackets to mount to frame.after brackets were made,pulled up fender took out magnets(they were about1/4 thich).fender really hugged the tire.plan on doing the same for my vrod

A friend of mine built some for his T-bucket out of fiberglass. He took a tire on a rim that was the same size he was putting on the car stood it up and fiberglassed down over the top bigger than he needed. When the glass had hardened he filled the tire with air and it popped right off. Then he trimmed it to size and shape, alittle paint, and mounted them to his suspension to move with the tires. Fenders themselves arent the problem... its how the hell are you going to mount them to hub/backing plate/etc; Almost every triker I know that had cycle fenders changed them to frame mount fenders...When a fender comes off it can zing foward at incredable speed..Thats pretty dangerous... Its tuff to make decent looking mounts that will hold up to the daily shock and pounding the take..

I'm building a Volksrod here in NZ & have the same dumb rules as you with regard to fenders. The thing that irks me the most is that if you have a pre 36(ish) car you can run fenderless. Not a problem until you build a brand new fibreglass rod or whatever (like a 32 coupe) & you can run those fenderless too, which just aint fair in my book. However..

I got a friend of mine whom is a metal spinner to make a buck the same shape as the tire I'm gonna use, but with an extra 10mm for clearance (approx 3/8 inch for the imperial folk). These were spun up from aluminium & look absolulely awesome. Perfect fit for the tire nice & close & hugs nicely. I haven't figured out how to mount them yet, as I'm not quite at that point, but should be relatively straightforward...

Some great ideas there guys thanks heaps, im gonna keep my eyes out for some trailer fenders i think, anyone have any ideas on mounting brackets? as trikertroy said i think thats where the problems are going to lye....

I don't mean to run you off, but there is a UK site, http://www.volksrods.co.uk/ (is that it? I lost my bookmarks ) But I bet there would info there on how to build the brackets and mount the fenders, info is in here too, but searching 'mount brackets' is not gonna work

unless someone wants to be nice and drop the thread in here? But once you see it, you'll see it's easy to do

and there are more pics of that burnt orange one in here too, I was looking for that yesterday, nice, but a lil too much bling, but still nice~

I've seen them bolted off of the spindles a couple times. Saw one the owner had used extra long bolts on his disk caliper mounts, then bolted the brackets for the fenders to that. Another had welded tabs to the spindles. Trailer fenders are very stiff and usually mount from only one side. I also saw one that used a bracket and supports welded to a couple of large pan washers on the the spindle itself behind the spindle nut so that it didn't interfere with the hub rotation. That kinda makes changing a flat a lengthy process though.

Look at older front motorcycle fenders. check out how fenders are mounted on old morgans. Mounting them to the spindle with three straps front-top and rear on the inside of the fender should be plenty, even if the fender is relatively thin. I have no idea how much fender is necessary in AU, so it may not need even that much.

i'm to trying to build a Vrod under belgian laws..so fenderless is not an option
i already did a lot of thinking and trying but didn't found the "eureka" answer yet
i guess it defers from whatever style you build..
i'll start trying to build fenders as soon as my two sideprojects are ready
so take a peep at my topics once in a while (and i'll try to keep them up to date)
