We have this old Asian biker guy areound here that rides a 1200 sporty with apes that is hillarious. He looks like an orangutan hanging from the bars and he's so small that he is literally standing on the pegs and hanging from the bars riding the bike.

In general our cops don't really bother guys with apes tooooo much, but there is a legal maximum height of 15" above seat height for handlebars here and I do know guys that have had repair orders to remove their apes in the past. That bike would be stopped immediately around here.

Well.... I am the proud owner of a.....











FUCKING BUELL.

I had them down to $1200 + new rear tire + full service and the financing department axed the whole thing. Apparently they won't finance $10 g's on a $6 g Yamaha. Yeah I still owe $10 g's on the Buell and it is the collateral on the loan so that means I can't even sell the bike privately without paying out the financing. I'm stuck with it.

So the saga continues. I checked with the service dept to see where they were at with the wheel bearing and got "man, it's been so busy I haven't even looked at it to see what it needs!" I called it in on Saturday, they picked it up Tuesday afternoon (was supposed to be Tuesday morning) and was told they would get to it Wednesday (today).

The local Harley dealer near me doesn't even sell Buells, and I've heard "We don't service or sell Buells. They aren't really Harleys anyway" from the staff in the stealership. It always amazes me the way Harley owners WANT to hang out at Harley Dealers. The dealership is hte last place I want to have to go after buying a vehicle, new or used. Teh local dealer is Huge and it's a really nice ride for folks from just about any direction, but dayummm is that fucking place expensive. Just today my brother called to see what it was going to cost him to replace the rear tire on his heritage softtail. $378 for a wide white wall installed. 1.5 hours book time to mount and install a new tire. I told him to call another local shop that has a good reputation with the v twin guys. He got the exact same tire for $120 and $40 to mount and balance on the bike.

Exactly! Harley dealerships are just overpriced boutiques. The real shops are little joints with dirty windows and rows of bikes out front. You won't find t-shirts, do-rags, bumper stickers, leather bondage gear, or any of that other crap that seems to attract so many folk...

That's exactly what the both of the places I sent him are. They wll both work on anything and have both been in business for as long as can remeber doing the same thing. No pretentous asswholes.

I'm still struggling to get my bike on the road. The engine is a 1979 Sportster Ironhead. The problem I'm having is getting the damn intake boots to seal. I had a leak so I ordered up some new boots from Jireh Cycles. They arn't working for shit. They keep slipping off the manifold when I tighten up the clamps. Anybody think intake boots from Harley Davidson will be any better or the same probably made in China crap that the aftermarket is selling? My other option is buying some good quality silicone turbo hose and cutting some boots from it. I know there are a couple of guys with Harley experience here..... got any tips or suggestions for me?

tiquilla, I work at a Harley dealership parts department. I can't say that I know too much about wrenching on an iron-head but, we've got a few technicians that have been around a while. We've got one tech that started wrenching when you could still buy a new knucklehead. You'd never know by looking at him but, he's a wealth of knowledge when it comes to old Harleys. (to look at him you'd probably wonder how remembers what day it is ) Tomorrow I'll ask around to see if any of the guys have any tricks to get things sealed up.

Check the intake boot clamps. I've got a nicely chromed set (two piece type) hanging on my shop's wall, which are not round where they compess the rubber boots once they are clamped down, or at any other time. They leaked to beat the band (old saying meaning they were crappy). The current ROUND set have been on the bike for forty thousand-some miles with no leaks. Do not use silicone, make sure the surfaces are clean and dry.

Thanks for the tips and thanks for checking with some pros for me Doc. I'm going to call the local Harley dealer to see if they have any boots in stock so I can hopefully give them a look over before I buy them. I'm so close to riding the damn thing but keep hitting these small road blocks

Good luck with your Iron Head. Mine's a lot of fun and the Harley guys are astounded that it's an '83 and running. Mine's .005 over with Wisco pistons, manley valves, and I'm running Andrew's PB+ cams, and a Zipper oil scraper at the flywheels. The exhaust is a copy I welded up of a XLCR Siamese. The old bike really scoots when I wnat it to.

to me a harley or buell is pure waste of raw materials. i dont think they are worth the prizes they go for. you pay for the name. the new ones might be better quality, but espesialy the AMT? years they build loads of crappy build bikes.
the aermachi harleys i hear arent good? hmmm is license build of italian bike. friend of mine has a old aermachi. the same model harley copied, and that things is solid as a rock and has no real technical problems whatsoever. (its old bike, so maintenance is higher anyway)

over here you pay 3000 euro for a shovel that is totaly bust and needs every part in engine replaced, and prolly the frame welded everywhere. when i buy honda of same era, usualy, change oil, check ignition and valves and drive it. ow, and it probably costs 750-1000 euro.

i drive ducati, a old 600SS Pantah. not the best bike around, still beats harley in durability and quality anytime.
and i dare to say any jap, like honda, yamaha suzuki and so on wil ALWAYS be better than a harley.

so would i want a harley, or buell? nope, no chance in hell

I think I got a decent deal on the bike at $4K and I like it. It's special construction but with the "Harley" engine I figured the resale would be ok if I ever needed to sell it. Runs and shifts good, just got to get rid of the damn Vacuum leak and dial in the carb.

that's a big bike to be tossing around like that. I definately couldn't do that. I saw a cop here take a giant police harley across two lanes left and then three lanes right on the interstate at about 100 chasing a car once, sparks flying the whole time. nuts.

I have seen that video a dozen times I LOVE IT... I used to teach motorcycle safety with Team Oregon. I taught the Advanced Rider Training (ART) and was also an assistant instructor with the Oregon motor officers.

When teaching a class to someone with a big bagger, and they would say "my bike wont do that" (offset cone weave) I would show them the scrape pads on their floorboards and say it can be done. its all about Head turns, clutch and throttle control.

After I went and did a really tight figure 8 on their bike they would do the cone weave with no problems I ride a vulcan now and still blow people away with tight u-turns
