Default Your opinions please!

Hey crew,
Got a lead on a 1974 Ghia coupe semi-auto. Original owner, 49k miles, always garaged, new engine but doesn't run,
hasn't run in 3 years, popped in nose and side rear but
all professionally repaired, had full repaint. Very little
rust from what I can tell. Going to take a look at it soon.
Got a rough ballpark you think I should be looking at
moneywise?

The guy was thinking $6500. I'm thinking more like $3500-4000. Any thought on this?

Good number to start with. You can go up and he can come down.

The auto-stick might be a factor that will keep people away, thus giving you better bargaining power.

Definetly clean, any idea why it doesn't run?
IF, and that's a big IF, I had $4000 I would buy it depending on why it doesn't run
Did they give you any hints, or is it that it just hasn't been started in 3 years?

For that asking price, I would want to take the Ghia for a drive. Is the new engine an actual 'new engine' or just new to the car?

From what I know, it's a new engine but quit running 3 years ago. He doesn't know why it won't run. I'll be checking it out soon.

All VW's for sale have rebuilt engines. Lol
I would hype how it's gonna cost you to pay someone to get it running. The whole no test drive thing is big.
If he starts using words like "rare", set him straight.
Nice looking ghia, good luck. Try somewhere bellow 5k for sure.

I sold a good running but rough paint and so-so interior a couple of years ago for $3000. Guy never blinked at the price and drove all the way down from northern Wyoming to get it. I would guess you will have to go above 4K to get it. Big thing here is the engine. Good thing you have enough know how to at least make a reasonable guess as to workable or totally dead.
My first thought is why didn't he take it to a local mechanic and get it running, since that could make a huge difference in selling price ?

Auto stick can be tough to work with. A nonrunning engine is a broken engine until proven otherwise.

Not running is a big factor since you have no idea if the trans is good or not. See if it will at least turn over by cranking or by hand, wrench on crank pulley.

I once pulled down a customers supposedly rebuilt 1500 cc single port which came with the sixties bug he'd just bought for his daughter. The engine ran, though had an odd vibration. When it was apart we discovered one side was comprised of bits from a 1300, and the other from a 1500. Everything had been cleaned, sort of....there were new rings, which were not gaped properly, but the rings grooves and cylinder bores were shot. First time I'd ever seen aluminum foil behind badly worn main bearings. Engine was a disaster.
