Me too. Like the big glass in the back. That emblem is pretty cool mod for the hood.

I got a little bit done today. Cut the third roof from a small rectangle window, no idea what year, for the filler for the top. Oh I have decided against the rag top untill I can get an actual sliding top. Got everything tacked in on the top, moved some panels around, and now i feel like the roof is pretty straight. It will require some mud however. Also started working on the 1/4 windows I think I created more work for myself but what the hell I'm learning as I go. I'm thinking of going to the u-pull-it next saturday and cutting out the area behind the 1/4 window so maby I can get this area straight. maby grab the doors off of both cars while I'm there.

I dont realy have an update lots of 1/4 inch welds trying to keep the heat to a minimum. The cool thing is that as I'm welding I'm working on the lines in the roof and they are getting better all of the time. A little hammer dolly action, weld, if it starts to dip slice the tacks and go again. So far I'm happy with how she is turning out.

On a side note I have decided to go front engine with her. Kind of traditional hot rod style, with the open engine compartment.

I picked up a 1999 Explorer 5.0 v8 for reasonable. Going to put a t5 behind it and maby a 9" or 8.8 rear. I dont plan on going hog wild with the motor, just stock with a low rise dual plane intake and a 4bbl carb.

Some things I need are:
Intake, Idle to 4500-5000 rpm range
Front cover, early, so I can run a standard rotation water pump and vbelt
Balancer 50 a oz. Imbalance Probably will get a new one.
Vaccume advance dist
t5 transmission and flywheel

If any one has parts they are willing to part with pm me. I'm willing to pay a reasonable price.

Ok here is the mill.

Here are some pics. I started the frame last week and worked most of the day today. The front is z'ed 6". The back will be determined when the body is on the chassis but it will need to be enough to get the car around 4-5" of ride height. I got a model A grill shell and rebel wire's hot rod harness for Christmas from the wife. I picked up a set of 33 ford wishbones, that are split, a 33 ford axle ( that hasent showed up yet thanks to the USPS), and some other odds and ends from ebay. The chassis main rail is 2x4x3/16" tubing, and with the exception of the front cross member all cross braces are 1/8" wall. I have a long way to go but it's a start.

The bug with the five litre will really haul. The Windsor motor in my (now) 3400 pound single cab really makes the rig move. So, all that motor in your bug should keep a permenent grin plastered to your face. I've got a Edelbrock Performer intake and cam waiting for 'that 'spare time moment' this summer. I run a Mallory Dual point and 600 ABF. This combo has worked out really well. If the Ford motor has some miles on it, check out the timing chain, specifically the drive gears. If the cam drive is nylon, replace it with a steel one. Mine was iffy at 30 k miles and jumped a couple of teeth. not a whole lot of fun if the truck is loaded with lumber.

Thanks I'm hopeing that my weight will stay down but she gets hevier every day. And I'll check that chain but i think it is a factory roller chain. The motor in my ranger was (or still is) a roller when I tore it down. This is the expolrer version of the gt40 already has a roller cam and good heads well as good as you get factory. I have decided to run the dual bugsprays on a Vintage speed adapter and probably a performer intake. The bug sprays are the 300cfm version so i'm glad i didnt try to run the 1600 dp off of them. I think I'll run an aod because foot well room is going to be a premium and i dont think a hand clutch (like on my John Deere) will work well on the street.

Hmm. Yeah, the cam is driven by a chain. It's the cam sprocket to watch out for. Ford used a plastic covered cam sprocket to keep noise down, or somethng like that. Check it out to be safe. Of course mine is a '79 351 and things change. You'll save a bunch of weight by using the five speed vs the T-98 truck unit I run in my single cab.
I can't believe you wouldn't opt for a hand clutch.

Ok it was a buisy day on Saturday. First I picked up my transmission. It is an aod from a 87 mustang it will need a good rebuild, possibly a conversion to 4r70w gears, shift kit, fairbanks srevo, kevlar band, etc.....

Next i spent some time working on the frame. I cut some 2x3x3/16 angle to attach to the factory locations in the heat channel. Then I did alot of mesuring and got the scrap back half situated where I wanted it. Did alot more mesuring and cut out some 2x2 box tubing to attach the angle to the main rails. Here are some pics to show how it went.

A friend came over and helped me lift the body off and set it on the new frame. I had to finish cutting out the inner fender aria and cut off the front heat chanel. The front chanel will be extended laiter and filler panels for the cowl sides will be cut from the scrap doors.

We then mocked everything up. The frame rails 6" off the ground, and the motor at 3 degrees and abought 2" higher than I expected as I am going for a cartoonish rat fink look.

Oh yes and in the last pic i set the fi intake back on and set the bug spray carbs on some box steel to simulate the vintagespeed adapter that I plan to use. Those carbs flow 300 cfm each so I'm going to rework them new throtle shafts, 12 degree plates in the back carb, adjustable jets, and progressive lincage. Havent decided on air cleaners, Mr Stromberg has insert air cleaners so you can run scoops. I dont know we will cross that bridge when we get there.

So far some of the parts I've gathered

37 ford bones
3 94 Holley carbs (Ford stamping)
47 ford cowl vend (in pretty good shape)
33 ford beam axle
37 repop spindles
disc brakes front (from the place that shant be named)

I've done a little work on the right side roof. Mounted the front beam, bones, breaks, and motor in the frame.
If you guys and gals ever need any brackets for hot rods check out www.welderseries.com he has some cool trick mounts for hotrods.

here are some update pics.

I am planing on using a truck upper and lower fi intake to build up a log style intake for the three duces, Kind of like a mini tunel ram. Get the runners long as possible and use a small plenum chamber hopefully promoting low end turque. My concern is that the end cyls will run lean if I run a progressive linkage. Also I'm kicking around cam options I've been told that the ex motor cannot take alot of lift. Thinking stock mustang or e303 motorsport cam. I want to keep it reasonable on fuel as I intend to be able to drive this one. No more wild wicked shit with 118* of overlap for me. The Ranger runs like a scalded dog and will pass everything on the road except for a gas station. I will say it is worth every twenty I put into the tank however. Back to the volksrod I just dont want it to have that lazy stock v-8 sound.

Good progress, keep up the good work. I think the E303 cam would work good for you, it is a bit more aggressive, but not too much. Should work well with your proposed intake and rest of the basically stock engine. Leaving the exhaust separated duals, with no corssover, will give more of the sound you want.

I am probably going with lake style headers. I like zoomies but I've heard that they sound like shit with restrictors in them. I used to run a set on a mild small block that I ran in my derby cars. 1 1/2" tubes straight up through the hood. Sounded great but think it would drive me crazy on trips.

Don't realy have an up date. I have been realy buisy at work finnishing my second 60+ hour week, and will be on vacation all next week. so If I find my camera there may be som pics. Some changes th the drivetrane may be coming. I origonaly was going to run the 5.0 with 3 duces. Then since i didnt go with drums up front, I decided fuel injection would be the way to go. I dont realy like how the 5.0 looks F.I. on an open fender car. I have kicked around the idea of putting twin turbos on the 5.0 to promote a more simetrical look. Then it occored to me I have a Northstar sitting on the floor in my shop just waiting for a moment like this. Any way decisions decisions.

I must have been a sleep to miss this. Looking really good! For my next build, years down the road, I want to do something similar. V8 front engine powered, tube frame, volksrod. I look forward to following this build. Go 500!

Ill try to get some pics up. Ilsa is still not running but she is learning new tricks. She is getting bagged and will be able to lay frame. Also I want to do a draw through twin turbo set up with the 6 deuces. So she is a while out yet. Latest news is we went to the Respect (Tribute to Drop Jaw) show in Tarboro last October and got 3rd place rat rod. The ranger got 1st place 4wd wild and Best 4wd of show. A lot has happened since then. Mostly with the ranger and we got set back on Ilsa bug.
