We have a Winner!!!

That's it, Game Over... Bring out the tarp. Cover the field. I can't watch this anymore. It's over. Turn the lights out. Bring in the bull dozers and turn this place into a parking lot.

Yes... can you tell I like It...

Wink Re: rattle can spray job

Back in the late 70's we used to rattle can our closed course baja bugs the day before a race.....and again next race and next race.... 6 cans of .99 cent spray bombs in what ever color you like!! A bit of tape and newspaper and instant graphics too! Once dry-A quick wash off w/carwash soap that has a sealer or wax in it...and out under the lights Friday night the cars would look awesome! Folks thoght we constantly got new cars...lol

Ozzy, I like your black over red & sanded! I've done the red oxide base then took some light gray primer and hit the high spots or areas I wanted to really show thru(door hinges/light housings/body or window contours,etc....)then complete black finish coat everything.....1500 and a buffer....looks just like worn thru 50/60yr old orig. paint. you guys can do this with colors too!!! & signage too! Randy at Oldbugs.com does this alot w/his freak show cars.. Get real crazy and use an airbrush....

Looks great

I have the toughest time with rattle can paint, since my hands don't work like they should (trigger finger really sucks, getting ready to have my right pinky finger fixed soon, after that my only finger which hasn't had trigger finger release surgery is my right thumb) any how about a 3rd of the way thru 1 can my fingers don't have the strength to hold the can and push the button down at the same time
I gotta hold the can in one hand while pushing the button with a finger from my other hand, then once that finger gets tired, I hafta switch fingers

Next time any of ya's do any rattle can painting, try holding the can in one hand, then push the button with you other hand (fingers from other hand) and see how tough it is to do

I think I'm a hafta get 1 of my sons to paint it for me when the time comes

There is a plastic handle-trigger thing that snaps into the top of common spray cans so the trigger is much like a spray gun.. It only costs a couple bucks and makes spraying MUCH easier.

Thumbs up Re: rattle can spray job

Hey Ron, ever try using your thumb? I have severe chronic tennis elbow/tendonitis in both arms and can't use my fingers too long. I use my thumb on Foof cans! Works perfect! No pain, easy to spray and aggitate without aggitating my elbows! only down side...tip of my thumb usually matches the paint job..lol!

Triker, those trigger sprayers have been around since the 80's....work pretty good but I've ruined more than one paint job when the can falls out of the trigger handle.....

Somebody should tag that first post as a great example of virtually invisible
Code:
fenders
(is that what the # symbol is for in the format area? ).

I have one of those rattle can trigger things but now that I need it I can't seem to find it, I'll keep looking because the day I go buy another one I will walk into my garage and the old one will be right in front of me, it always happens that way

And yes I do use my thumbs, the only thing is I can't seem to keep a steady hand when painting like that and end up with runs everywhere

As soon as it warms up I will be painting the front of my V-Rod blue, then fade to black as it gets to the rear, then I'm a paint "Black-N-Back" on both sides or I can call it "The Bruise"

There's always brush painting. I did this one when I didn't have the equipment or money for a spray job. It takes a lot more time and trouble and a lot of patience, but it's cheap, you don't need a spray booth, the neighbors don't complain and the results can rival any professional spray job.

I have seen a few cars and trucks that were painted by brush and you couldn't even tell until you got up close to it and looked real good, it was hard to tell
I also seen an old truck that was painted with a roller, it looked good once it dried most all the roller marks evened out and could barely be seen

When it comes to painting, I totally suck at it now-a-days whether it be spray, brush, or any other way of applying paint I need to let my body rest for a few hours before otherwise I get the shakes real bad, my shakes are called tremors from medication I hafta take

You should see me eat peas, corn, or soup, by the time I get the spoon to my mouth it's empty

Trust me, you couldn't tell the paint job on my boat was brushed no matter how close you got. It's a matter of using the right brushes, proper thinning, sanding, buffing and polishing.

You don't need a steady hand, either. The finishing stages eliminate the brush marks. Back in the 1910's and 20's this is the way factory cars were painted.

Oops, sorry for the spray-bomb hijack. Actually, same principal applies - the end result depends on the finish work. Back in the early hot rod days driveway mechanics used to spray their cars with lacquer using the exhaust from a vacuum cleaner to power the gun (talk about HVLP!) ... not even as nice a finish as a spray bomb, but the lacquer dried so fast you didn't expect it to be smooth. Then you color sanded and buffed. An amazing finish was possible and when it got dull you could buff it again. Spot repairs were easy, too. Enamels replaced lacquers because they flowed better and held their shine longer and you could get away without sanding and buffing.

No reason a spray bomb paint job couldn't be sanded and rubbed out, assuming enough paint has been applied and it is properly cured.

Here's a good brush paint tutorial:

Here's one for spray bomb:http://www.ehow.com/how_5642598_spra...um-paints.html

A fellow that lived next to me a few years ago, always painted his own cars.
He decided on the color for the next 6 months, bought the material and got started.
Paint, gasoline, small paint brush, and a new roller. His paint jobs usually looked good, for about 4 or 5 months. By then the paint had gone totally flat, with zero shine. Sometimes he used Comet and water wash, to bring back a little shine. He said that was cheaper and easier, than rubbing compound.
The gas made the paint flow real even, and was cheaper than thinner.
I think he had painted it 8 or 10 different colors, while he lived there.
He ALWAYS went to the local paint store, and bought mis- matched paint. Back then it was selling for $10.00 a gal.

There was never a dull moment, with him around! LOLOLOL
He was always trying to find a cheaper, easier way of doing things.

I painted my little homebuilt single seat Super Cub airplane with 4" rollers from Lowe's box store. Used Sherman Williams Krylon acrylic enamel. That was 4 years ago, and its still looks new. I have a paint booth and a turbine HVLP spray outfit that I paint airplanes with, but this was quick and easy and cheap and I like it. I will do it again. Pop
