I only ask, because your index keys look really far from the item being molded. I usually put my keys closer so there is no flex in the mold.
The base is just two layers of 3/16" hardboard laminated together. I am not overly concerned about flex since both pieces will be placed in heavy duty core boxes at the foundry. Fred also does these small pieces with plaster molds, not sand, so there is not nearly the pressure and such when making the mold. I am confident it will be fine based on my conversation with Fred.

Finish work this weekend!

Cool, sorry for the lame question. I'm interested in mold making, haven't done anything for a foundry, just small silicone stuff.

No sweat. Glad to share what I know.

Spent some more time getting the patterns ready. Will post some pics tomorrow....almost ready.

I also spent some time working out the bolted connection between the two pieces. I drilled a through hole and a countersunk hole for the bolt in the base and then drilled and tapped the upper piece. Bolted it all together and it works good.

I will get some better pictures of the various details.

I also tried out a potential finish for it. I painted it black and then sanded off the paint from the surface of the cog wheel and the "VOLKSRODS". Really makes it pop. I am thinking I might powdercoat it and then sand and polish some of the surfaces.

That's bascially what I've had in mindbut just for the inside of the cog and the volksrods logo, with everything else polished up.

Patterns went to the foundry today!

Should be able to pick up the cast parts some time next week!

Oh yeah, I also had the privilege of sending the boss a PayPal for $1000 on behalf of all those that bought a hood ornament.

Thanks to all of you for helping me help keep this place going. The folks on here are the best.

Thank you SO much John... and thank you to everyone that bought one of these works of art. I don't know what to say. You put us ahead on the server bill with some extra we can put toward getting restocked on some of the shirts. You don't even know what a relief that is.

Can't wait to see this in person... the prototype turned out rad!

If you missed out on a hood ornament, buy a calendar.

You need one.

Just order 50 small flat rate boxes from the Post Office so they will be here when the hood ornaments are done!

A flat rate box...This being the VolksRods site, (um, Jeff told me this) I thought that delivery would involve a couple of busty, bikini clad girls with tattoos here and there carrying a large 'YOU SUCK' banner, loud music, and beer.

That was if you bought it cast in gold and...

Rule 1: Bikini clad tattoo girls are never flat.... well it would be a shame to put a bikini on a decorated washboard.

Rule 2: The beer is a requirement for a garage and you should have them on hand(and in hand) at all times. Unless this conflicts with Rule 1: adjustments, hand sizeing, or removal.

Rule 3: Loud music is optional but YOU SUCK banners are also required, unless these conflict with Rule 1 or 2.

I plan to call the foundry tomorrow and get an update. I haven't heard of any trouble with them. I presume, it is going good.

I will update when I know something.

Still waiting on my flat rate boxes to sow up from the post office, too.

Thanks for your patience.

I am going to number each one. No date. These will be the only 50 ever made. I am even thinking about videoing the smashing of the patterns.
