hey guys need some help.

laptop (not mine) crashed ... i am trying to put a back up copy of windows xp on it and it says this

"windows xpp home edition setup
setup did not find any hard drives installed in your computer

make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connecte to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware confuguration is correct. this may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

setup cannot continue. to quit setup, press f3"

does this mean that the hard drive fried itself?

i got one... does anyone know of any free or cheap software for data recovery? i'm not talking "i accidently deleted something and want it back" i need "the disk has bad sectors and is giving me errors on folders saying the data is corrupted and unreadable and it won't even let me delete the (now) empty folder"....
long story short, i bought a Western Digital Tb external in Dubai and had about 460Gb of data on it, including some irreplacable mp3's, images, videos, and personal creations, and after 4 months of service, it's dying on me in a horrible way. pretty much anything i've done on a computer in the last 3 or more years, is disappearing from my life for good... :(

Basically if the harddrive is physically damaged, which sounds like yours by your error messages, then you need to take it to a place that has a platter reader. Basically FBI equipment, where they take apart your harddrive, remove the platters (the actual storage discs) and the machine spins and reads it under it's own power. If, IF, you can find a place that can do that, the prepare to pay at LEAST $1000.

One thing to try, take your corrupt harddrive out and put it in a working PC as the secondary harddrive. See if that PC can read it and try to extract what you can. If it cannot see it in the BIOS (boot up menu before Windows, etc, try pressing DEL, ESC, F1, ???; BIOS key varies depends on motherboard) then your harddrive is most likely physically bad.

the problem lays it in being two separate 500Gb drives in a single housing. i've got an associates in computer tech so don't worry about lingo going over my head...
but i think files are split across both drives so i can't separate them i know my spelling sucks...lemme alone, i'm drunk... hahaha
i was just hoping someone knew of a miracle program that could find the header or footer of a file at locate the rest of it for me..

there's a bunch of them, mostly works from quick formats or accidental deletes. I've never tried them on corrupt harddrives but tried it on a crashed USB flash thumb drive and it worked. They don't always get 100% of your data back, but sometimes as long as you get a few then it's better than nothing. But still your BIOS needs to at least still be able to see your harddrive, not necessarily the format or partition.

I forgot which programs I've tried and had success though. No real true free ones, may say free but free to see what's recoverable then pay to actually recover it. But there's ways to make them free/get full versions for free. More at www.downloads.com

An external RAID? Or was the "single housing" an attempt to describe a RAID config?

I have a dumb question.....................

My old computer died so I took out the hard drive and installed it in my new computer. The old drive is slaved and is now "D"
My question is how come I can't delete the windows folder off of D_drive It's not in use any more but XP Pro won't let me kill it off. I also can't access any of the windows folder on D_drive, it says I'm not authorized. I am using the same log on and password as I used on the old computer

it's two 500Gb, that can be set up as 500Gb that mirrors itself on the second drive, or 1Tb that has no backup..

The local geek at the computer shop down the street
was able to read most of the info off my old hd after
it crashed.Took a couple days,cost me $10.00

Unfortunately,they went out of business.

Ok. So, it shows as a TB drive on your system because you've set it up as a striped RAID instead of a mirrored RAID.

I've been okay moving the striped RAID configs from one system to another, if the motherboards have the same chipset. From there, you could do as was suggested - move items to a new drive.

My method around this is a little brutal. Move what you don't want off the drive. Then, use a Win9x boot floppy to remove format the drive.

lol, cobey, either i'm not understanding you, or you're not understanding me...

i'm not trying to move it to another system, it's a USB plug and play external hard drive that is crashing.

my biggest dilemna now i guess is the money to buy a new Tb since i've got about 500 Gb of shit on this one..

oh well, more money in the flush hole... haha

No, I understand what you're about, which is why I am trying to ask questions.

What I would do it take the external enclosure apart and remove the two 500GB drives. Then, take the drives someone who can set them back up in a RAID config and attempt to read them. The problem may not be the drives, but rather the interface between them and the PC.

I can give it a shot for you if you like. I have access to all the hardware that is needed. Just installed a RAID set up in our new home server. :)
