it doesn't like: FDISK /MBR c:

I tried various combinations FDISK /MBRc:
FDISK /MBR C: FDISK/MBR C: etc.
It comes back Paprameter format not correct or Invalid switch.

Then run it without the switch.

FDISK /MBR

It has been a while since I've done it, it may not have needed the "c:", sorry.

Actually, the more I think on it, it doesn't. FDISK /CMBR needs the drive designation. /MBR assumes the local HD. Sorry.

Ran FDISK /MBR ,it took a couple seconds, then gives me A:\>

Botted again without the floppy,no change.
I just get a cursor.

With the floppy,no change.
I get 4 options:
1-Help
2-Start computer with cd support
3-Start Computer without cd support
4-Minimal boot

Help is a dead end,the other 3 end up with A:\>

Did you say you were trying this with ME or with Win98? If it is ME, try this (yes, I'm running out of ideas as well):

1) at the a:\> type cd c:

2) hit enter. Should now be a c:\>. If not, it is not seeing the HD. Try redetecting the HD in the BIOS and try again.

3) if it is at c:\>, type DIR and hit enter. Should scroll a list of folders/files. If not, you have bigger issues cuz that means it is not seeing anything on the drive.

4) Assuming we are going forward, type CD WINDOWS hit enter CD OPTIONS hit enter CD CABS hit enter.

5) Prompt should now be C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS> Run DIR again, making sure that is scrolls a bunch of files.

6) Type SETUP and hit enter. This should start the ME install from the hard drive and HOPEFULLY, this should work. If you've been trying with Win98, you can accomplish the same thing by copying the install CD to the hd to a folder called WINBAK and do the same thing as above but CD to C:\WINBAK instead of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS (WinME creates that backup on install, 98 does not)

I've been using Vista and it's good so far. I prefer it over XP now, but HATED it at 1st since they changed alot of things. But ya, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a modern setup, but you can turn off all the fancy doo-dads and make it run better w/a slower setup

Dude, it's the doo dads that make it VISTA. I'm more into their new touch technology.

i'm sure you all have seen it but posting in case some missed.

sadly it's only opening up for restaurants but will come public eventually, i say within 3 years post vista 2nd patch.

any new Windows is all about doo dads they rip off other companies. Like Vista, has stole Yahoo Widgets, etc. It has a cool hack to make any screensaver as your wallpaper background. But still overall I prefer it over XP right now. It's also a great OS for the tablet PCs since it'll give tablet function out of the box, no more special edition OS just for Tablets.

The new Beryl Linux is the king of doo-dads right now though, like an OS on LSD

limited slip differential? hah jk, different thread. I do like the eye candy that comes with vista. Just haven't tried it out, i'm about to rebuild pc...then see how it goes, but i'm still drawm more to macs. We'll see too many to switch over, i'll probably wait until I have to. :P more $$ for my toys.

XP had a simple plugin you could use screensavers for their desktop too, i forgot which but it started there from what it remember. As for that touch pad, i posted they ripped that from some students. I saw them demo it frst, but Bill waved some little pocket change (for him) and took the technology. Way to go MS.

Pretty much format the harddrive, will erase EVERYTHING. So backup anything important first.

"Windows cannot format this drive because it contains files in use by Windows."

Do I need to do this in Safe Mode ?

Maybe I should put it away before I punch it again.

Boot off the floppy and run the format c: from the a:\>

You can't format a drive that is in use by windows, so if it is in the other laptop, that is the drive it is running off and will not be able to format it. Booting off the floppy takes care of that.

ya, you can't format the drive that Windows is running on. You can use FDisk to format (from a bootup floppy), or before installing a new Windows you can chose the format option in the beginning

What is the largest size floppy available ?

I got some 1.44,which only hold 1.39 IIRC.
Is there anything bigger ?

They used to make a HDDD 2.88 floppy, but you needed a special drive. There was also the LS120 by Sony, but they need a special drive as well.

Thought i found a Windows 95 floppy disk Torrent.
Which was great,
until you realize all the files are too big to fit on floppys.

w/in Windows it doesn't matter what version DOS you're running. Versions of it really stopped to matter when Windows 95 started and took over MS DOS 3.11 It's basically just DOS from there on, no version numbers since nobody devlopes for DOS anymore but you can technically run everything in Windows still just using DOS commands typed manually, which alot of tech support and programmers still uses for certain things
