Off and on.

Has anyone got a full version of Windows 95 on floppies ?
The laptop has a '95 license, and I don't think '98 came on floppies. The price of old Toughbook CD drives is a little steep on Ebay.

If the CD drives has alot of bidding, that means you can resell it failly easily. Buy one, use it then sell it once done. Or try to find a PC forum for the toughbook and see what CD drives would work, etc.

What model Toughbook? My old job has a big bin of obsolete laptop parts, I can call down and see what they have, I still consult for them occasionally and could get a real good price if they have a match.

buy an external cd drive and use it then keep it or decide it's not what you wanted and return it. Then install from a cd. I'm sure i have an extra copy of 95 if you want it on cd, i can ask a buddy if he has it on floppys

It won't boot from an external cd,or I'd be finished already.

Our old printer connects to the parallel port(I think).
The new computer doesn't have one.

Is there a Parallel to USB adapter available
that will work for a printer ?

We still have ink cartriges for the old one,
the new printer/scanner uses specail Dell cartriges.
No idea how much they are.

There are USB to Parallel adapters, should be able to get them at BestBuy/Circuit City/CompUSA.

I found DOS 7.10 on floppies,so I installed that,and it will
boot. One step closer. So now the plan is to copy the
contents of the i386 file from the W2K disk, into a folder on
the laptop and run the install from there.

Sounds simple enough.

Going to have to dig out the DOS for Dummies book.

I am going to start posting the 'problems' i get from my users. I am doing this to vent and also an attempt to keep my sanity. The names of 'them' have been changed to protect my ass.

The staff where I work don't think on their own. This is what I deal with on a daily basis. I will keep it to one entry per day.

I will look into this and get back with you.

I know that a file can be moved in that manner, and if it were shifted a few spaces, I might think I did it accidentally. However, I am virtually certain that I didn't do that, and the fact that it relocated way down at the bottom of the list and outside the file that it was sub'd under makes me think there is another way. I would like to be sure there are no goblins afoot. Please research to see what the other possibilities might be.

The only way I have seen a folder get moved is if someone moves it, not sure of another way.

I found it. It relocated to the bottom of my list somehow. How could that have occurred?

I had an Outlook subfile set up for one of my cases . I just got something new in and was about to shift it to that file, but it is no longer there. I didn't delete it, and it is only about a week or two old. I need it. What happened? Can you get it back?

OK, more one today.

My office has a large kitchen area, maybe 500sqft. In the kitchen is a full bath, shower, sink, head... The staff, well all but one, knows not to use that bathroom during regular hours. The kitchen is a high traffic area plus people eat there, no one wants to smell da funk. It seems someone either could not make it to the main restrooms or just did not care/know. So the HR person asked the receptionist to put up a note. Here it is. The bad part is it seems the receptionist added the 'd' after she was done, all upper case vs lower case. So it went like this. "ya that looks good, wait, it needs this..." I was able to get the pic before the HR person took down the sign.

** This is not a direct reflection of all Southern people, I am sure Antioch, CA has some winners too. **

I have compiled a stack of her emails also, just for fun.

Hmmm, could it be that the sign was directed toward that one particular person, using their own style of speech?

While I'm in here ....

I'm on a cable modem at home. Everything on my system is on surge protectors but, as far as I know, there is no surge protection on the cable itself, it goes directly into the modem. He had a helluva storm here the other night and I got to thinking about that.
Should I have some kind of protection before the modem?

If the cable line (in ground or on a pole) gets hits it could fry the modem. I am not aware of a cable surge protector but I am sure something is out there. But as far as your system itself I would thinks its ok but you never know. A power hit to the cable line could go through modem to the cat5 cable and then to your NIC and might even your sysboard. Maybe call the cable company and see if they have anything or any suggestions.

I'm doing PC upgrades for a county right now for public high schools. Today's high school has a staff lounge room with the sign outside "STAPH ONLY"

hey I'm finally back on-line!! I ended up just calling my computer dead and I bought a used lap-top that has a 1 year warranty. If I have any trouble with it I can take it back and get full purchase price back for one month or get any service for a full year. I'm pretty proud of myself becaose I only spent a little over 400 for it and can use all of my periphirals with it like my printer or my PDA. I feel lucky because I avoided getting Windows Vista and can still use all of my old stuff with it. I just need to get used to using a touch pad instead of a mouse and not using my speakers when I listen to CDs. I also need to try this units ability to watch and record DVDs. OH and I just wanted a unit to record CDs but the CD writer that was available for this one will also record DVDs for use on any DVD player. I just need to try it before I can make plans on how I will want to use it.

Since you brought it up, are there any "good" small PC speakers for a reasonable price ($50-ish or less)? I have a pair of Polk Audio's (unpowered) that are scratchy sounding even at low-medium volume.

[NOTE: I also have a powered sub-woofer, so I only need a recommendation for better mid-high range speakers.]

Finally got my old POS laptop running on Windows 95.
Now I need to install the correct drivers for the touch screen.

I'm sure I can find them, are they self installing ?
Do I have to drag and drop them somewhere ?
Where do they need to be ?

Jason, I feel your pain. I really do.

I had a call today from a "user" about our program.

"The parental notice won't print. Your stupid program is broken again. Fix it."

"Ok ma'am, did you get an error message or did it just go back to 'Select Option'?"

"Some stupid box came up with a big red error message and the form won't print. Your program is junk and I'm sick of this."

"Ok ma'am, I'm sorry you are experiencing difficulties with this operation and I'll do my best to help you -"

"YOU BETTER."

"-but I can't recreate the problem on my end so can you please try again and tell me what you are doing and what happens?"

"Fine. See? There it is! The error screen again and IT WILL NOT PRINT!"

"Ma'am, what error screen?"

"YOU CAN SEE IT, YOU TELL ME!!"

"Ma'am, I can't see your screen, I'm on the other side of the country, I don't have those powers."

"Don't get smart with me! Fine. I'll read it to you. It says 'Your document cannot print the parental notice because you haven't entered in any parents for the student. Please go to the Student Details window and enter in the parental information before proceding. There. HAPPY? Stupid program is broken, AGAIN."

"I'm sorry ma'am, so you have entered in a parent's information for the student and you are getting the error still?"

"No. I didn't enter in the information. It just won't print."

"Ma'am, you need to enter that information in, that is what the program is telling you, and until you follow the proper steps, it will not print."

"So you mean to tell me I have to use the proper procedure or else it won't work???? THAT IS RETARDED!!!!"

"Yes ma'am, you have a n--<CLICKDIALTONE>...ice day."

I get these all day long. The sad thing is look at her language.

You know what she is?

Creative has some decent 3pc speaker setups that would be nice. The subwoofer helps out quite a bit on the low end, provided you put it in the right spot. And, I wouldn't buy anything that isn't powered.
