but something for what I was/still have going on.
I went to pc pitstop .com. They have added some new scans. I did a ping test , it was good, for dial up. But when I did the tracer, I lost connections again. Turns out, it's the second server at my phone comp..... I did a print out showing the time outs..
the gonna hear from me monday~
Can't afford their dsl pack and since we don't have fiber optics cable here, can't get it from anyone else either.
end hijack~
back to the other now~

Understood.

Your unit is only 4 months old, and so, should still be under warranty. Typically HD products have a 3 year warranty. I checked Western Digital's web site for products like yours and found they have a 5 year warranty.

That being said, here is some food for thought, not just for you, but for everyone.

Hardware warranty isn't worth the paper it's printed on when it comes to lost data. The company will give you replacement hardware, but, your data is still lost. And, they will not help you get it back. For the important stuff, the stuff you cannot replace, make sure you have a good backup.

Matt, in your case, if you are going to use an external drive, get one with mirroring RAID. If the main drive starts dying, the second one still has a copy of the data. Newegg.com has some 2TB and up units. You could also build your own with some drives and an enclosure (also available at Newegg.com).

Our "new" pc is taking noticeably longer to shut down now,
for some strange reason.

XP Media Edition, running AVG freebie anti-virus,Spybot and Ad-aware.

Definitions are up to date, defrag run regularly(C:shows 78% available),haven't installed anything big lately.

Any suggestions ?

I used to be able to use www.whois.com to figure out
who owns a domain name, and when it was up for renewal.
Of course, they changed the site, and I can't find the
magic button any more.

Any other sites that will give me this info ?

any other site management/sellers can check WhoIs info. I usually use godaddy.com, search for the site, then the next page is should say "Site is already taken (click here for more info). That'll take you to the WhoIs info

Well, the techno-gods decided to aim the fan my direction before throwing shit into it.. and no i don't mean i'm now listening to a bunch of drum and bass...

first as most of you know my terabyte external took a shit about 5 weeks ago and i lost anything and everything i had downloaded, taken pictures of, created in Word or Photoshop or anything else I had done on a computer in about the last 4 or 5 years... I got over it.. er.. am getting over it... gawd i miss my music, had over 10,000 mp3's...

anyway...

last week my internal drive in my laptop crashed and i've been trying to find a replacement for it, what i'm stuck on is the drive is labelled "AT Disc Drive". not ATA, not EIDE, IDE, SATA, SCSI or any other acronyms i know, but "AT". I called HP since they made the laptop and asked em what kinds of drives are compatible? since I don't want to go buy a 120gig and the motherboard can only recognize 80gigs..etc. the guy tells me any "Ultra AT" drive should work but to be safe I probably shouldn't go above an 80gig.

I can not for the life of me find an "Ultra AT" "UAT" or even "AT" drive on the internets. does anyone know what I should be looking for? it looks like a regular laptop drive, except the connectors slide in vertically instead of on a ribbon cable..

Any 2.5 drive should work except a SATA. I have a few on hand if you need.

possibly, i'm not looking for anything too monstrous, even another 40 gig would be fine at this point. i'm using my roommates laptop now and there is so much bullshit spyware/spamware on it...

also, i'll prolly still buy the laptop off of you too, since i don't recall what the hell i did with my HP HD image discs, i think i may try my hand at linux again instead of dealing with no updates from MicroSuck because MY Xp disc was "creatively acquired" ;)

Pretty sure I have a 40 and/or 60 around.

I would suggest Kubuntu for a linux distro. It has dropped right in on my laptops with almost zero problems.

how much would you be willing to part with one of those drives for? shipping and all?

I keep seeing bullshit online about how great
usb drives are,and how durable they are.

My experience:handy ,yes.Durable ? NO !

My second one just died for no reason.
It's been sitting on the desk beside my computer
for a few months, not banging around in my pocket,
going through the wash,etc.

I doubt i used it more than 20 times total.
Imported piece of SHIT.

Is there such a thing as a GOOD usb drive ?
Or are they all just disposable crap ?

Probably cheaper to burn CDs.

Any suggestions ?

They are generally durable, at least the ones I buy are. I lose them before I break them. But, there are a few people at work that have broken a few. Usually, it's the connector that goes, which I solder back on for them.

I have used allot of USB (Jump / Kangaroo) drives and have never had one die on me. I used to use them for moving files between my office computer, work laptop and home computer or laptop. I bought one of the Western Digital drives that is powered off the USB and it is 160Gig. I don't use the small (256 to 2 GB) much any more. They are Very Handy and Quick! Normally I carry a 2GB with me at work and the WD in my bag. There is my 2 cents worth.

I think the first one was Horizon, the second was some No-Name.
Office Depot has both of them on sale this week.

AND

they also have a Kingston 1Gig,with 5 year warranty,for $10.00

I will be saving the paperwork on that one.

I never had a thumb drive die on me neither. I'm currently using a 4gb one I took out of the shell (exposed electronics) that I keep in my wallet all the time, still no problems neither (though don't recommend doing that to anyone).

OK computer gurus. I keep getting a popup that wants me to download a virus protecter (defender install.exe) When windows checks it, the web site has no ID. I have Norton and it says that I have no viruses. I have done a complete scan. the damn thing just keeps popping up for me to download. how do I get this shit off of here?

stop going to the site that has it as a pop up? :P

naw, i saw something similiar the other day, i forget what site i was on, but it opened a new window that was extremely similiar to a Norton scan screen, then said i had about 5 viruses and asked if i wanted to clean them.. having just run a legit scan a few days earlier, i knew it was BS and just closed it and forgot it..

This one comes up no matter what site I'm on. I'm sure that its a bogus file, even tho the screen says that it is recommended. Ususally after windows detects that its not a good file and I cancel them they don't come back. This one is constantly popping up. I have no idea where it came from!

no. According to a website that I found, defender is a site that is attached to a trojan. So I did another full scan and there is nothing there. I have heard that Spybot and adware really aren't compatible with norton. Hell I don't know. I just want the damn popup to go away. When I go into my programs list I don't have it in there. According to the web site, it has to be installed before I can get rid of it?
