Spybot and Ad-Aware work fine with Norton.

Just make sure all the definitions are up to date.

Actually,Norton sucks. We used it for a few years.
The freebie AVG is what we use now.Very pleased with it so far.

Norton should take care of Trojans.

Get the latest definitions from Norton, and run a complete scan.

iunno, i don't run any spybot or ad removing programs and only keep norton up to date because it's free for DoD employees. normally though I don't use anything at all, just every 5 or 6 weeks I run a full scan with Trend Micro's free housecall service..

Norton will not remove a lot of spy ware. Nether will Trend micro. You should get spybot and adware also there is one called supperantispyware that i have been using in conjunction with all the others. No ONE program removes them all.

What's worked best for me is just monitoring where I go and no clicking suspscious links/files..
For about 9 years I didn't use anything at all and had no problems whatsoever, my system was 100% reliable, and never had any issues. I used it for downloading movies/music/software etc.etc. kinda baffled me that my parents used their own machine for nothing more than messageboards and emails, but they had a virus scanner, about 3 or 4 pop up blocker/spyware removers and all this other protection crap and they somehow got at least a virus every 2 months...

maybe i've just been lucky for a decade?

Anti-virus and anti-spyware are different.

I think a Trojan should fall under anti-virus.

Thinking you can go on the net without getting spyware is like thinking when you get out of the shower you won't have germs. As soon as you log on you set something. I have customers that can't keep their computer working for a month without it being so infested it wont run. I myself don't have a problem but i do have spyware. I run my programs once a month or so to keep it in check.

Norton and Macafee are resource hogs and I hate them both. Norton will finds stuff but then can't fix it. what the hell is that about. I get people calling me all the time because Norton found such'n'such but won't remove it. What a wast.

Virus, Trojans, spyway, malware, they are all different types of programs made to do different things.

Like I said no one program removes then all

I would suggest you update all the definitions, for Norton,Ad-Aware,and Spybot.
Then run them all.Delete everything they find.

Worst case,Norton doesn't have a fix for that Trojan yet.

Well so much for that. I did what you suggested Unk, and I still have the popup. This is really going to piss me off.

Well I don't like Norton either but the reason that occurs is that Norton has one of the best, most evolved heuristics scanners on the market. This allows it to identify malicious files that it does not contain in its database. Your right though, its a massive resource hog and its is generally just to damn intrusive for my liking.

A couple years back I had a Norton employee send the walk though for completely removing every trace of the Norton security package. It was like 4 and 1/2 pages long of line by line instructions. I asked the guy why the company didn't create a script to do it and he said that they did have one for in-house use but it had to be updated to frequently to make it public.

Norton has one of the strongest detection engines on the market as they should. Peter Norton was doing this shit long before the internet went public. That said I would'nt use it. Expensive, not required, slows ur machine down so much that formatting every month wouldn't cost you much more time wise and just generally friggin annoying.

Speedfreak:There are malware Forums, that specialize in this sort of stuff.
If you have the name of the Trojan, the will be able to help.

They will probably ask you to run Hijack This, and post the results.
Then they can tell you what to delete, and how to do it.

There is always the option of wiping and re-installing the Operating System. Then all you have to do is STAY AWAY FROM THE PORN SITES. Windows XP has a pop-up blocker standard I believe. I'll be quiet now and go sit in the corner.

Well, my 1997 version of Visio 5 has begun to choke when using "Save As (jpg)" so I'm thinking about getting something new to replace it for 2D measured drawings.

One snag I'm finding is that none of the ones I've seen yet (in the $100 or less range) can save as jpg - great for attachments here and use on my webpages.

Open to recommendations, but keep it simple (CAD seems like overkill for what I do - hell, even though I used Canvas at Boeing, it seems too much trouble).

Since OpenOffice Draw is free, I downloaded it and have been playing with it for a couple of days, but it seems pretty imprecise (see attached example). On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be anything between free and $150 . . . .

The answer was right in front of my fingers!

While in Visio 5, I do a Shift-PrintScreen, open PaintShopPro, paste, crop, and SaveAs jpg . . . . Bypasses the faulty conversion app built into Visio entirely, so I'm back to full functionality - for free.

Feelin' a little silly, though, for not thinking of it sooner.

I'm looking at my old 15" monitor right now because my 17" flat panel died on me. It was only two years old but it goes totally black now. I thought it might be my video card but this monitor does fine. Any ideas? Is two years the normal lifespan of a monitor now?
