With the 'hatch' you'd keep the VW profile and still have good access to the engine. The bulkhead, even with a rear window would keep the noise way down.

Wow! Just found this thread. Haven’t been on here in a long time. I’m also building a mid-engine beetle but using Passat/Audi 1.8t and 5 speed. Its PFM in the intro build section. I like the way your setup is working out. Will be reading all the way through this and checking out the tread on the samba!
