Hi everyone,

I am thinking through my setup for steering on my project and was wondering what the advantages / disadvantages of going with a Rack and Pinion setup over the stock setup? I have TinBeaters front end extension.

Can some of you more knowledgeable folks educate me?

Make sure you get a Rear Steer rack,
otherwise your wheels will turn the wrong way. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/eek1.gif[/img] [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/eek1.gif[/img] [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/eek1.gif[/img]

Installed correctly,a rack will give a good feel,in a compact design.
Installed incorrectly,you can create problems with bump steer and Ackerman.

I would be looking for the narrowest rack I could find,
and consider the length of the steering arms in the original application.

what about a rabbit rack? they're pretty small.I don't know how available they are but they might be worth looking into. Anyone know if a buggy rack would work onn the street.

These are pretty much what are availlable for buggies, from play to race. They are compact and most have mounts available already.

Ian, you mention a "good feel". One of the few things I have heard is that the R&P will steer easier and smoother and does not need the shock part that standars equipment does.

But anyone really have a pro's/con's comparison between the stock steering and going R&P?

Nearly every car made these days has a R&P setup. Most all the off-road race buggies use R&P. I would say that it would be a good way to go if ya wanna fool with it.

racks were basically designed to save weight and eliminate excess parts. In the end it does the same job. I know what bump steer is, just run "ackerman" by me again to refresh my memory.......

Ryan,
A stock steering box will give you the best results with the type 1 front end. the reason for that is that the tie rods are much longer than they would be with a rack & pinion steering. There is a conflicting arc between the control arms and the tie rod pivot which does create bumpsteer. the shorter the tie rod, the more conflict there is.

There was a red bug at last years Kelley Park show that was set up for road racing (was actually in an import magazine challenge) and it was set up with a rack that had a bracket between the two eyes and the tie rods attached to that bracket.

Rob,

That is an interesting concept to keep the Tie Rods in a stock length. But, with the master craftsman Walt mentioning it's probably better to keep the stock setup to keep bumpsteer down, I'll probably stick with stock. However, with the setup you mention, if there is a great reason to try that R&P I'd love to hear it.
