Thanks Kim. Run out of room to put stuff, so building stuff like this will be put on hold for a bit.

Well yesterday I finished assembling the transmission, I installed the SVDA distributor, set the timing and adjusted the valves, now I just need to find the strength to pull the engine and swap the transmissions, then put the engine back in and hook everything back up and sync the carbs again

I hope I have enough in me to finish it by Monday

BTW Jeff, that pulley table is pretty cool, how big is it, diameter and hieght?
Depending on that you should make some stuff to go along with it, like if it's to be used as a coffee table or end table you should make some coasters for drinking glasses
My friend who owned the scrapyard had a 4' by 4' by 4' box of cast iron belt pulleys, most of them were 3" to 8" diameter by about 3-1/2" to 4" wide, I grabbed a few years ago, I think he scrapped them by now but they make nice wheels, they work great for rolling stuff on a dirt floor, I'm gonna cut one in half to use as a pattern so I can cast them 2 at a time in aluminum so they aren't so heavy

Again cool table

The pulley is 24" diameter, glass is 25" on top. It's about 23.5" tall. Made up of 1" black pipe. (11% rebate from Menard's too!) To keep the pulley from moving, there are 4 small engine studs going round it on the base. Glad you like it!

yesterday i installed my PLX AFR gauge.. today I tried to use it to really dial in my carbs.. no matter what jet changes I made, or how far in or out i screwed/unscrewed the mixture screws, nothing affected how it ran or the AFR numbers..

decided to check if I blew out a manifold gasket and maybe had a leak screwing me up.. nope. no leak, i broke one of my manifolds..

so it's a few hours later, engine is on the stand in the garage, gonna surf for new manifolds now.

this'll help me stop procrastinating.. i needed to yank the engine anyway to install the CHT sensors, and I wanted to yank it and the rear fenders so i can redo my access holes.. guess I can do that now..

Always something, isn't there? Yesterday I was working on the Single Cab and the fuel pump (a stock single action ) quit. I thought that it might be a blockage from the old tank that I missed when I cleaned out the lines. Nope. At least the engine doesn't have to come out.

Hot day, but I rode my old Triumph into nearby Santa Rosa to pick up a fuel pump for the Single Cab's 351 Windsor engine. The guy brought it out and checked the price twice. I was expecting thirty or forty bucks. The total with my 10% veteran's discount came to... $14.65.

He should have added on $13.26 for the "snarky, bad pun" tax.

Which is why I didn't send you to pick it up for me.
Then with things mechanical seemingly going well, the Ranger's starter quit. Well, I guess that 129,000 miles got to it. At least the truck was parked where I could get a jack and stands under it. So, it's in the high eighties, humid, in the sun, I'm laying in dirt and gravel. A neighbor walks by and says, "You're really lucky you can fix things like that." I think I felt luckier when I was a few years younger.

Yea lucky I can do it and usually cut up my hands in the process. Not to mention the grease and oil that will stick to me or depending how sore I will be from luckily having to crawl under something that could squash me like a bug.

Yep Lucky!!!

Oh I really hate having to crawl under a car. Doesn't matter if it has jack stands or in on a lift. Being under a car isn't fun for me.

Got one 7/8" u joint nearly complete. There was a lot of casting edges and flashing left on them, which let to some binding in different angles. Got it so I'm getting about 35 degrees out of them. Before they hardly reached 20. The medication is zapping my energy so I think I'll call it good for now. I'll try and post pics when I can.

Continued trying to track down the problem with the Single Cab's 351 Windsor engine. I thought I'd had it right a couple of months back. But nope. It all began with the ethanol eating the liner of the 24 gallon fuel tank I'd built and installed in the mid-eighties. I ended up replacing the tank with a standard aftermarket 10 gallon, the lines, the badly gummed up carb, and more recently the stock pump. The Accel coil which works off an 80's Mallory dual point, went south. I installed new points and static times her at 10 degrees BTDC. A new Accel coil went in too. Which doesn't seem to have much of a spark; red/orange verses a nice blue/white. Two weeks ago I bought a MSB coil, which didn't work so hot. I called the tech line to find out I should be running a .8 ohm ballast resistor instead of the 1.5 I'd been using. I ordered the correct resistor, but won't see it until this Saturday due to a computer glitch at the parts store. I'd also replaced the Bosch Platinum plugs, which I really liked, with Autolites, which were available.
Yesterday, I found the coil wire of the new Accel plug wiring kit showed nothing on my ohm meter. I tinkered with it until I got a solid reading and them checked out the eight distributor to plug wires, which checked out. I also ran a compression check and got 135 to 140 pounds of compression at each cylinder. a new timing chain has about 8k on it.
Hoping the coil wire was the problem, I put the Accel coil back. Nope, she still barely runs, and stumbles.
Tomorrow the MSD's ballast resistor should arrive.
I've been running this setup since 1981. Maybe I should move into the 21st century and install new ignition system.
Any thoughts are welcome. Except, "that will teach you to replace a fine VW engine something else." (a neighbors quote.)

You replaced the lines, but how about the connectors between them? They sometimes get crud in their nooks and crannies too. Any extra kinks or bends in the line causing restrictions? Any of the carb jets? Those things are so small. You might want to check for a faulty ground too. Take a jumper cable and clamp it to the block and then to the frame to see if you have a clear electrical flow. I had that in my buggy once.

I' have a good ground cable running from the frame to the engine block, but I'll double check, again..... Meanwhile, today I borrowed an old but working Delco-Remy coil from a buddy's '73 Chevy pick up. Tomorrow my long awaited MSD required .8 ohm ballast resistor is supposed to arrive.
Stay tuned folks.
