Butyl Tape
Re:: body/pan gasket?
Would butyl tape make a good body/pan gasket? How hard will it be to put the holes in it? Someone over on the samba someone mentioned it but I cannot find any posts on here or there about anyone that has actually used it. I am putting the body lift on my diesel baja tomorrow and I am planning ahead...
Thanks
Randy

Re: Butyl Tape
How thick? Long as its as thick or almost as thick as stock I'd say go for it. Not sure how to make those holes though, unless you have a set of leather punches that include the bigger sizes like 1/4"-1/2". Then you'd just have to clean that tape grunge out of them to keep them workable. I think I got my set of punches at HarborFright.

Re: Butyl Tape
Good idea on the punches. Here is a link to the tape: http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Det...622_0006438159
This is what I am hoping to use on the body lift side. I am using a stock type between the lift and the pan, then this stuff on the lift/body side. I am thinking maybe apply the tape to the lift and then drill the holes through the tape or maybe cut an x where the holes go with a box knife? The tape is 3/8 inch. Maybe not wide enough?

Re: Butyl Tape
If you've got plenty of the stuff you could make 2 rows of it or even 3 in places where you think you might need it. That stuff might last forever.

Re: Butyl Tape
it comes in 15ft rolls, so 2 rolls should do it twice I would think. Maybe I could space it so it is on either side of the holes-sandwiching them, so to speak. It also comes in 1/4 inch. That would leave plenty of room for the holes and provide a seal on both sides. Good idea. Thanks.

Re: Butyl Tape
Don't afraid to use the hell out of that stuff if its a baja. The more sealing the better in case you gotta go through a mudhole.

Re: Butyl Tape
Ifn you use butyl you will NEVER get it apart again!
Use camper foam tape. the stuff used to seal snugtops to pickup beds.

Re: Butyl Tape
There is NO WAY I would use that tape for the pan gasket. I used it for the camper and hated every minute of it too. The pan gasket aren't that much. That tape is a nightmare. just my .02.
